Match Preview Bale Club World Cup Real Madrid Kashima AntlersSantiago Solari has warned his Real Madrid side that they must start 2019 with a bang when they travel to face Villarreal in La Liga action on Thursday. The Club World Cup winners have had a couple of weeks off to prepare themselves for this encounter but January promises to be a taxing month, with Copa del Rey fixtures thrown in with five league matches, in which no slips can be accommodated after Los Blancos lost five of their first 16 games of the campaign.“They are a solid team and we must go into the match with energy and aggression,” Solari said on Wednesday.Meanwhile, the coach is not eyeing the January transfer window as an opportunity to make dramatic changes to his squad. That means that no exit is forecast for Isco, who has struggled for minutes under the new coach.“All of the players are part of this squad,” the Argentine affirmed. “Isco? He is a great player and he’ll keep making us happy.”Like Madrid, Villarreal also made a change in the dugout in the first half of the season, with Luis Garcia replacing Javier Calleja a couple of matches before Christmas.Although he guided them through in the Europa League with a 2-0 win over Spartak Moscow, they were held 2-2 against struggling Huesca in La Liga. On both occasions Villarreal finished with 10 men, and if they are to stand any chance of an upset on Thursday, they surely cannot afford such ill discipline.last_img read more

‘Top four wouldn’t be enough for Pochettino at Utd’

first_imgMauricio Pochettino would have to deliver more than merely a top-four finish if he took the reins at Manchester United, says Paul Scholes, with trophy challenges expected on multiple fronts. The Tottenham head coach continues to be linked with a potential summer move to Old Trafford. He has seen his claims to a permanent post with United talked up by many, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently impressing in an interim role. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? If Pochettino were to take the reins, then he has been warned that he would face considerably more pressure that he shoulders in north London. The Argentine has talked down the importance of silverware to Spurs of late, but Scholes says success would be demanded if he were to take on a new challenge in Manchester. The United legend told Radio 5 Live: “It’s a really difficult one.“As a player you want medals, you want trophies, you want to be winning stuff. I think as a club, and financially, Champions League is a little bit bigger I suppose.“It would be a disaster if clubs like United didn’t get into Champions League next season — I think they will do the way they’re going — but for Tottenham it’s massive as well.“I think Tottenham are at a point now where winning the FA Cup or the League Cup is much more important than being in the Champions League the year after.“He couldn’t say that [at United]. If he’s at United he’s got to go for everything. Being in the Champions League, in the top four places, isn’t good enough.“The only reason it would be good enough this season is because of the way the team have performed over the first half of the year. Winning the FA Cup will be good for United, it be a great achievement for Ole if he can do it, but if Pochettino comes in next season he has to try and win everything.“Okay the League Cup may be on the back burner, but he has to try and win trophies for Man United. That’s what the fans expect and the club expects.”Pochettino still has Spurs in the hunt for honours this season.A narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday has ensured that Tottenham remain in the Premier League title picture, while they also have a Champions League last-16 encounter with Borussia Dortmund to come. Report: Brazil 3 Bolivia 0

first_imgPhilippe Coutinho scored a brace as Brazil opened the Copa America with a 3-0 win over Bolivia in Sao Paulo. After an underwhelming first half at Estadio do Morumbi, Coutinho scored twice within eight minutes of the restart to put Brazil in control on Friday.A VAR check and handball led Coutinho to the penalty spot and the Barcelona star made no mistake in the 50th minute before making it 2-0 three minutes later after capping a sweeping move. Everton came off the bench and scored the goal of the night with a blistering effort from outside the area in the 84th minute as the Selecao – who have won the Copa on each of the previous four occasions they have hosted in 1919, 1922, 1949 and 1989 – made a winning start in Group A.GOOOOOOOOOL DO BRASIL! Mais um gol de Philippe Coutinho, agora de cabeça!!2 x 0  | #JogaBola #BRAxBOL pic.twitter.com/sHeGi03rzs— CBF Futebol (@CBF_Futebol) June 15, 2019Playing without superstar Neymar after he was ruled out of the tournament with an ankle injury, 2018 World Cup quarter-finalists Brazil dominated but struggled to create any real clear-cut chances.Thiago Silva saw a header flash wide of the post and Casemiro came close with an audacious effort for Brazil, who had 77 per cent of the possession in the opening 45 minutes. The half-time whistle was met by a chorus of boos around the stadium amid a subdued atmosphere as Brazil failed to impress against Bolivia – a nation in which they had won nine and drawn two of the past 11 games on home soil, scoring 46 goals and conceding just four times. But a VAR check helped ease some of the tension and pressure with the ground after Adrian Jusino was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.Coutinho successfully converted the spot-kick before he completed a quick-fire double after latching on to Roberto Firmino’s cross at the back post. The result was never in doubt from that point as Brazil turned the boos into cheers in the south-west of Sao Paulo, where substitute Everton scored a stunning long-range goal with six minutes remaining. What does it mean? Brazil up and running with 100th winSeeking a ninth Copa title and first since 2007, Tite’s Brazil got the job done in Friday’s curtain-raiser. It was not perfect but the Selecao managed to claim their 100th Copa victory.Coutinho takes centre stageThe Barcelona attacker struggled at Camp Nou in 2018-19, leading to speculation of a possible return to the Premier League via Chelsea or Manchester United. Coutinho, however, stepped up when Brazil needed him most with his first international brace since scoring a hat-trick against Haiti at the Copa America Centenario.Improvement needed by BrazilIf the half-time boos were any indication, Brazil did not meet expectations prior to the break. Richarlison and Roberto Firmino were virtually non-existent in the first half, while Coutinho and David Neres struggled to make an impact. The Selecao did beat Bolivia but they will be punished against better opposition if they do not improve. What’s next?Brazil will look to make it two wins from two against Venezuela on Tuesday, while Bolivia face Peru on the same day. read morelast_img read more

Set 220 to win, India’s batsmen failed to put up any kind of fight against some disciplined bowling from the Black Caps on a flat pitch.New Zealand were asked to bat by Rohit Sharma and the Kiwis were all too thrilled to go first on a batting-friendly surface. Tim Seifert, playing only his 9th T20I and the dangerous Colin Munro added 86 for the first wicket. Krunal Pandya snared Munro for a 20-ball 34 in the ninth over but by then the damage had already been done. This was India’s heaviest defeat in T20Is in terms of runs. In 2010, India had lost to Australia by 49 runs in Bridgetown. In the 2016 World T20, India were subjected to a 46-run defeat against New Zealand. New Zealand lost Seifert, who made 84 off 43 but they were well on course for a huge total. Khaleel Ahmed helped India avoid further carnage when he bowled a near yorker to send Seifert packing 16 short of a well-deserved hundred in the 13th over.advertisementBut Williamson and Ross Taylor (23 off 14) ensured New Zealand got to 219 for 6. Scott Kuggeleijn walked in at No 8 and smashed three fours and a six to finish with 20 not out off 7 balls to give the Black Caps impetus towards the end of the innings.India’s chase got off to a promising start when Shikhar Dhawan hammered Kuggeleijn for two sixes and a four in his first over. But Tim Southee dismissed Rohit Sharma with a well-directed short ball for 1. Vijay Shankar was sent up the order at No 3 and he did look like an able ally for Dhawan but disaster strick when Dhawan fell to Lockie Ferguson in the sixth over for 29.Rishabh Pant, who returned to the Indian team after being left out of the ODI series agaisnt Australia and New Zealand, failed to make use of a great opportunity. He fell to Mitchell Santner who yorked the Delhi southpaw for 4 off 10 balls. In a further blow to India’s chances, Santner struck again to remove Vijay Shankar for an 18-ball 27.Ish Sodhi, the leg-spinner, struck twice in the space of four balls to remove Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya. MS Dhoni watched helplessly from the other end but the task had become too stiff even for one of the game’s greatest finishers.India were batting deep on Wednesday. Krunal Pandya walked in at No 8 but the top order’s failure meant the required rate had shot up beyond manageable proportions. In the end, it was all about some batting for some kind of respectability for India but they will have to do much better with both bat and ball in the second T20I in Auckland on February 8.Also Read | Dream come true for Pandya brothers as they play together for India for first timeAlso Read | Dinesh Karthik makes up for dropped catch with stunnerFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Only the audience is no longer as captivated by his films or that of the other Khans-Aamir and Salman. The latter, “Bhai” to his fans, just squeezed through by a percentage point to hold on to the No.1 spot in the latest edition of the INDIA TODAY Mood of the Nation (MOTN) survey. Salman may have played Bharat in his last film, but it’s Akshay Kumar who wears the Mr Bharat label better with a roster of nationalistic films, such as Kesari and Mission Mangal. Unlike the Khans, Kumar is prolific, doing four releases a year, making him one of the busiest and highest paid actors in Bollywood. Not far behind is Ranveer Singh, impressing with his energetic theatrics and his inimitable sartorial style, riding high on back-to-back hits with Simmba and Gully Boy and shooting for his big-budget sports drama, ’83. Following him is Amitabh Bachchan, the actor who can still hold audiences captive with just his eyes and voice, as demonstrated in the surprise hit Badla. Just making the cut for the top six are Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, both of whom don’t have any releases this year. A noteworthy aspect of the MOTN survey is the high percentage of respondents who opted for ‘Others’ (17%), signalling the arrival of Ayushmann Khurrana (Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho) and Vicky Kaushal (Uri: The Surgical Strike)-both recent recipients of the National Award for best actor-and Kartik Aaryan. The era of one-hero rule certainly seems to be over.advertisement Loic Venance/Getty Images Rohan ShresthaIn the case of actresses, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone tied for No.1. Interestingly, Chopra hasn’t had a Hindi release in over three years and Padukone was last seen in Padmaavat (2018). Their pole position indicates that an active social media feed, elaborate weddings and an international presence play as much of a role in one’s popularity as their films. Both are producers of their upcoming releases-Chopra with The Sky is Pink (October 2019) and Padukone with Chhapaak (January 2020). Only a point separated Anushka Sharma, down from No.1 spot in the last edition of the survey, and Alia Bhatt from the two actresses. Sharma had a busy, though turbulent, 2018 as of her three films-Pari, Sui Dhaaga and Zero-only the second made a decent dent at the box office. This year, she has been in the public eye more for supporting her husband, cricketer Virat Kohli. In fact, Bhatt is the only one to gain ground in the top five, hardly a surprise given her fiery act in Gully Boy and a slate of big films in her kitty, including one with boyfriend Kapoor (Brahmastra) and S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR. Triple Threat: Meet Tullamore D.E.W.’s Latest Whiskey, Trilogy

first_imgPeople say lots of things in life come in threes, but Tullamore D.E.W.’s latest release, Trilogy, is going to be the only thing anywhere remotely associated with threes that you’ll want in your life. Released earlier this year, Trilogy is a blend of all three styles of Irish whiskey—pot still, malt, and grain—which gives it a unique character from nose to finish. Not only are all three styles of Irish whiskey represented, but it also aged in three different types of barrels, greatly changing the flavor from what you might think of with another Irish whiskey. First, Trilogy does its time in ex-Bourbon casks. Next, it is transferred to Oloroso sherry butts before finally being put into rum casks which, according to Tullamore D.E.W. Brand Ambassador and pub historian Tim Herlihy, “delivers a richer, smoother, more complex whiskey with a full-bodied taste of fruit, nuts and spice, and a lingering creamy fudge flavor. The nose has a nutty oakiness and rich spice interlaced with a hint of tropical fruit.”Related: It’s World Whiskey Day—Need We Say More?If that isn’t enough for you, Trilogy is Tullamore D.E.W.’s oldest member in their lineup, clocking in at fifteen years. This age, plus the triple barreled agin process just keep adding to the complexity that you’ll taste both on an initial sip and later on in your drinking experience.Intended primarily as a sipping whiskey, Herlihy says that Trilogy will appeal to seasoned whiskey drinkers looking for something a little different when searching through the premium Irish whiskey category. If you don’t consider yourself one of them, there’s still hope. The aging in ex-bourbon and rum barrels imparts a sweetness and a richness that will bring the spirit closer to the palate of someone more used to drinking bourbon or rum.Tullamore D.E.W. first_img Woodford Reserve Adds a Wheat Whiskey to the Distillery’s Core Range Located in Colorado Springs, Distillery 291 was born when New York City fashion photographer Michael Myers realized he needed to get out of dodge. That was 2011. Since opening, Distillery 291 has produced five kinds of whiskey (a bourbon, an unaged rye, an American whiskey mellowed with Aspen charcoal, and an unaged corn whiskey), as well as a citrus clove whisky liqueur. What separates this rye whiskey from other rye whiskies on the market is the finish. Where some whiskies (like Maker’s 46, for example) may finish with French oak, a common type of wood used in liquor-making, Distillery 291 finishes their Colorado Rye Whiskey with aspen staves — which, coming from Colorado seems appropriate.Appearance: Distillery 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey shines bright like a new penny.Nose: The rye spice characteristics come through first and foremost, and these are rounded out by notes of cooked fruit and fruit cake. A hint of pine can also be found mixed in there.Palate: A beery, sweet malty flavor is one of the most prevalent you will get upon first sip. It is bright and almost effervescent, leading you into baking spices and caramel that remind you that you’re working with a rye whiskey aged in new barrels. There is a certain heat on the back end, due to both the age of the whiskey (less than two years) and the high proof (101.7).Finish: As we get near the holiday season, the finish on this whiskey seems appropriate, as it tastes very Christmas-y. You’ll get nutmeg and cinnamon mixing with a cedar woodiness. The flavors linger on the palate for a while.Final thoughts: For a young whiskey, this is more enjoyable than many I’ve had. I’m curious to see what these whiskies would taste like once they’ve got a few more years in barrels. The real hang-up for most will be the price — at around $70 per bottle, it might be hard for some to justify splurging on a whiskey that is so young. However, we think if you appreciate well-made whiskey (and you have the money to spend), it’s worth giving it a try. It’s a whiskey that is good for putting in a flask and going camping in order to brave those cold mountain nights, or for using in a rye whiskey cocktail, as the flavor and proof will stand up to other ingredients.Distillery 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey is 50.8 percent ABV and retails for around $70.Feature image courtesy of Distillery 291/Facebook. Brew Cruise: Get Your Craft Beer On While Sailing the High Seas

first_imgThe concept of a brew cruise might seem a bit juvenile at first. Maybe it’s the rhyming of the couplet or the similarity to the old “cruisin’ for a bruisin’” expression. Regardless, the shorthand of the “brew cruise” phrase actually means something much different in the context of the modern luxury cruise. The Brewers Association estimates that craft breweries contribute more than $67 billion to the US economy every year. In other words, people really love their craft beer. Where there are passionate fans, there is money and where there is money, there seems to be a themed cruise, allowing people to spend more money on what they love (without having to worry about driving themselves from place to place).Below, check out some options for hitting the hop seas.Photo: Maple Leaf Adventures, Jeff Reynolds Maple Leaf Adventures, Jeff ReynoldsIn October 2018, Maple Leaf Adventures will host an exciting small-ship brew cruise along the coast of British Columbia, Canada, where you’ll sample more than 50 of British Columbia’s finest craft beers, speak with experts, and learn about beer and food pairings, all aboard a classic tugboat refitted into an expedition yacht. Check out the brochure here.If attending a niche-focused cruise doesn’t fit your travel schedule, Carnival Cruise Line’s the Carnival Vista is the permanent home to RedFrog Pub & Brewery, an on-board brewing facility featuring beer made right on the ship.  You can take a brewery tour with the brewmaster and then enjoy ship-exclusive brews like ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin’ IPA, ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat, and FriskyFrog Java Stout all before heading back up to SkyRide at SportSquare, a suspended bicycle track onboard the ship. (Yes, that actually exists.)Carnival’s Horizon ship also has an onboard brewery that provides libations for Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse. The “Flavortown” television personality Guy Fieri gets his own brewpub that pours a house label named Parched Pig. Parched Pig’s  exclusive offerings include a smoked porter, farmhouse ale, IPA and toasted amber. Growler fills are available to take back to your cabin. Say Goodbye to Cup Noodles: Here’s How to Make Ramen At Home

first_imgAh, ramen. A meal that is both a cheap and easy dinner when you’re cash-strapped and a dish that the best of the best chefs in the world have their take on. It is a culinary creation that exists on every part of the socioeconomic spectrum because of its mutability. Whether you like pork or chicken, shoyu (soy sauce-based) or tonkotsu (pork bone-based) broth, or something completely different, chances are there is a ramen out there for you.The thing about ramen, which is said to have originated in China and made its way to Japan in the mid-1800s (according to the Shinyokohama Ramen Museum), is that it is also pretty easy to make at home. Sure, you could spend years learning how to perfect it, but to get started, all you need is a little know-how and the right ingredients. That’s where we come in. We asked chef Nick Sorrentino of New York City’s new bar, Katana Kitten, for his take on some easy-to-make at-home ramen.Katana Kitten, which opened earlier in 2018, is a bi-level bar in the West Village that was created to offer not only Japanese-American food and drinks but a fun party environment.Below, you’ll find Sorrentino’s thoughts on how to make ramen, as well as some tips and tricks for when you don’t have time. How to Make RamenChef Nick Sorrentino’s Favorite RecipeRuthy Yang“At home, I like a very straight-forward broth with lots of ginger, onion, and soy flavor. Make sure to boil the noodles vigorously in unsalted water and beyond that, you’ll need a poached egg and lots of chili and scallion for garnish.”Ingredients:5 lb (750 g) fresh ramen noodles3 lb pork shoulder (with bone if possible), cut into large pieces1 lb double-smoked slab bacon8 garlic cloves, chopped1 large Spanish onion, coarsely chopped1 leek, white and green parts halved lengthwise and coarsely chopped1 egg to garnish (optional)3 qt rich roasted chicken stock6 oz dried shiitake mushrooms4 oz ginger, peeled and chopped2 tbsp canola oilSoy sauce and sesame oil for seasoningKosher salt to tasteMethod:Season and roast the pork shoulder, then place pork and slab bacon together in a large sauce pot until golden brown.Remove the meat from the pan and place aside to drain.Add the onion, garlic, and ginger into the sauce pot and sauté slightly.Return the reserved meat to the pot.Add the chicken stock, chopped leek, and dried mushrooms.Bring to a full boil and lower heat to a simmer.Adjust seasoning with soy sauce.Allow to simmer and reduce for 4 hours.Drain the broth and return the broth to the stove.Lightly shred the pork and return the pork to the broth.Boil ramen noodles according to the packaging.Top the noodles with the broth.Garnish with sliced scallions, poached egg, and sesame oil.Tips for Making Instant Ramen BetterCharles DeluvioNot ready to say goodbye to your Top Ramen or Cups Noodles? That’s okay, too. We know it can be hard to say goodbye to yesterday, that’s why we also got some tips and trips for how to hack your regular old cup of ramen noodles. The first tip comes to us from Masahiro Urushido, also of Katana Kitten. “I have one killer cup noodle recipe which you can see the image on my Instagram: Classic Nissin Cup Noodle with porcini broth instead of simple hot water topped with shaved truffle and few droplets of white truffle oil. It’s my delicious guilty pleasure. One morning, after the holidays last year, I found leftover Burgundy black truffle in the fridge,” he says.“Under the pressure of having to use it before it went bad, and partly wanting to keep the special holiday mood going, I took a Nissin Cup Noodle (beef flavor) from the pantry and added pieces of dry porcini mushroom. I used a Japanese cast iron teapot to prepare the water, opened the lid at 2 minutes and 45 seconds in (for perfect al dente), and shaved off a generous amount of truffle with a little drizzle white truffle oil also. The beef flavor works well with truffle. It is essentially a consommé, and the porcini broth adds deeper flavor while rehydrating the dried mushrooms’ umami flavor.”When he isn’t making his own ramen, Sorrentino employs the use of a few different spices to liven up his cup of noodles.“My go to’s are furikake, which comes in a variety of flavors and for some spice. I always have togarashi powder or sambal paste,” he says. “Also a few drops of sesame oil and some sesame seeds add a great richness and some crunch.”Either way, make sure you have a highball ready to drink too. Gov’t Meets Six of 10 EGC Policy Recommendations

first_imgStory Highlights Additionally, he noted that the Ministry completed work to develop the framework for public debt reduction through a programme of State asset privatisation and sale. Mr. Lee-Chin also advised that the Ministry of National Security has commenced a feasibility study to create a Global Jamaican Immigration Card for issuance to members of the Diaspora. The Government has met six of the 10 Economic Growth Council (EGC) policy recommendations targeted for implementation during the April to June quarter.EGC Chairman, Michael Lee-Chin, made the disclosure at the presentation of the Council’s third quarterly report at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston on Thursday, July 27.The policy recommendations come under three areas of reform – business climate, specifically public procurement; asset utilisation, in particular debt reduction and State asset privatisation; and Diaspora involvement in relation to immigration.Mr. Lee-Chin said that among the targets met in the area of business climate reform was work by the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service to draft the Public Procurement (Techniques, Procedures and Offsets) Regulations and Public Procurement (Reconsideration and Review) Regulations, which were completed and tabled in Parliament in May.Additionally, he noted that the Ministry completed work to develop the framework for public debt reduction through a programme of State asset privatisation and sale. The Chairman noted, however, that the May timeline to finalise and table the Public Procurement (Registration and Classification of Suppliers) Regulations, and complete the Handbook of Public Sector Procurement Procedures were missed.“The Ministry of Finance and the Public Service has advised that they are actively working on the establishment of the Public Procurement Commission, which is a prerequisite for the tabling of the third (set of) regulations,” he said.“Public procurement is an important tool for stimulating economic growth and development. The central government and its public bodies, together, purchased approximately $100 billion of goods and services last year. We are, therefore, urging the Ministry of Finance to urgently finalise the regulations and enact the Public Procurement Act,” he emphasised.center_img The Government has met six of the 10 Economic Growth Council (EGC) policy recommendations targeted for implementation during the April to June quarter. Mr. Lee-Chin also advised that the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) met the April timeline for the creation of a protocol supporting the establishment of enterprise teams to handle transactions related to improving the scalability and efficiency of the privatisation and sale of State assets as well as the public/private partnership process through which these would be pursued.Additionally, he said the DBJ submitted a protocol and framework to Cabinet for the outsourcing of privatisation processes to for-profit firms. The Chairman pointed out, however, that Urban Development Corporation (UDC) and Factories Corporation of Jamaica, which fall under the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, missed the May timeline for the submission of a plan to divest up to 20 per cent of their assets.“The Ministry is finalising the submissions with respect to the UDC’s assets, and the FCJ’s Board is working on a list of assets to be proposed for divestment,” he informed.Mr. Lee-Chin also advised that the Ministry of National Security has commenced a feasibility study to create a Global Jamaican Immigration Card for issuance to members of the Diaspora. This exercise, which got underway in May, is being undertaken by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus in St. Andrew.Chairman of the EGC’s Diaspora Engagement Subcommittee, Dr. David Panton, told delegates attending the just concluded Jamaica 55 Diaspora Conference that SALISES was selected through a competitive tender process.Meanwhile, Mr. Lee-Chin advised that while regulatory amendments that will facilitate the investment of pension funds in a wide range of products have been drafted, the June timeline for their tabling in Parliament has been deferred to allow for further analysis and consultations.last_img read more
