Chris Lacy Talks About 2-TD Performance and Gundy’s 100th Win

His post-game thoughts. #GoPokes— Cowboy Football (@CowboyFB) October 29, 2016Although there were a couple miscues between Lacy and Rudolph early, the junior receiver made the most of his three catches. His first catch came in the second quarter and gave the Cowboys their first touchdown. His next two came in the fourth quarter. He had a 19-yard play on third and eight to keep the drive alive and then the seven-yard touchdown to seal the deal and give OSU a 14-point lead with just over five minutes remaining. Chris Lacy had a big-time performance Saturday as the Cowboys welcomed No. 10 West Virginia for an early morning homecoming showdown at Boone Pickens Stadium.Lacy talked with OSU’s Allison Gappa after the game about his two-touchdown effort and the significance of being such a helping to secure Mike Gundy’s 100th win.“Mason just found me when I was open, he trusted me and I made the catch,” said Lacy. The Newest CFB Playoff Rankings Mean The Big 12 Is Finished

first_imgIt’s over. The Big 12’s slim CFB Playoff hopes have ended as its two best teams were ranked Nos. 9 and 10 in the newest CFB Playoff rankings. OU dropped one slot to No. 9. OSU stayed put at No. 10. They finished with a combined 15-1 record against other Big 12 teams, and neither has a shot at making it into the four-team playoff even with a win on Saturday. Why?Here’s why.Fifth Rankings: The #CFBPlayoff Selection Committee Top 25 for games played through November 26.— College Football Playoff (@CFBPlayoff) November 30, 2016 While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. Even if Clemson, Alabama and Washington all lose (improbable), there are other teams already ahead of OSU and OU that will fill the playoff spots. Teams that play games against teams in the top eight that would undoubtedly keep them clear of the Bedlam champ. In fact, let’s say that very scenario above plays out on Saturday. Let’s say Florida, Virginia Tech and Colorado all win their conference titles.Alabama would still be in. Ohio State would be in. The Big 10 champion (Wisconsin or Penn State) would be in as both are ranked ahead of OU and OSU currently and play each other. And Michigan or Colorado would be in if Colorado beats Washington (Michigan beat Colorado earlier in the year so good luck with that, committee). The problem for OSU and OU is Colorado. It is ranked ahead of both of them currently and would have beaten No. 4 Washington and won the Pac-12 title. The Cowboys and Sooners cannot surpass that. OU had a chance if it was ranked ahead of CU this week because it could have feasibly stayed ahead with a huge (yuuuuuuge) Bedlam win. But not now.So Bedlam will only be for Bedlam and the Big 12 title and a Sugar Bowl berth. A lot, certainly, but not what it could be if there was a clearer path into the CFB Playoff. That’s fine with me, and it’s fine with Mike Gundy. But in the big picture, it’s a bummer of a way to decide a postseason tournament. Also, I saw this on the playoff and I thought it was great. The committee is incentivizing losing a division game. They’re incentivizing NOT winning the conference. It’s bad for college football.— KilroyFSU (@KilroyFSU) November 30, 2016center_img Assuming now the plausible field’s down to seven. Pecking order:1. Dunn, Wozniak Getting Tricky With Drills in Spring Camp

first_imgAs the running backs were on their knees, driving their hands into a practice pad before falling to the turf, their new position coach John Wozniak was behind them talking about losing a bet and doing a belly flop. The drill represented the running backs picking up a defense’s blitz package, but Wozniak was using a little more imagery to get the point across.“You lost the bet,” he said. “You gotta do it.”Later in practice, the backs were flooding out of the backfield, past a would-be linebacker (who Wozniak was simulating) and streaking downfield for a fade pass from the quarterbacks.Wozniak yelled all kinds of things and chased as they ran by. Meanwhile, receivers coach Kasey Dunn was pulling out all the stops. So far this spring, he has shown the wonder of his receivers’ hands:Video Player Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Video Player Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. But Wednesday, he had the Cowboys doing things that, if done on Saturdays in a couple of months, would have landed them on SportsCenter.Dunn lined the group up alongside a tackling dummy. As the first came up, he stood behind the dummy, opposite Dunn at the Jugs Machine. The receiver wrapped his hands around the dummy, and Dunn fired.I didn’t see one dropped ball.Later on, Wozniak was working with the punt returners. He wrapped a towel around their backs and told them to squeeze it between their arms and their torso, so the towel wouldn’t fall. As the punts came in, Wozniak walked near them, threw his hat at them and flinched toward them to give a representation of traffic during the catch.Bravo, sirs. What a couple of awesome drills. Fight over secret St Annes residential school documents back in court

first_imgThe Canadian PressTORONTO – Survivors of the notorious St. Anne’s residential school square off against the federal government this week in another round of a convoluted legal battle over document secrecy.Among other things, the plaintiffs want Ontario’s top court to order a review of all St. Anne’s compensation claims adjudicated before the government disclosed thousands of documents from a 1990s criminal investigation by provincial police. They also want the court to set aside a decision allowing Canada to keep secret civil-litigation materials – despite an initial ruling to turn them over. The documents were generated during 62 lawsuits related to horrific physical and sexual abuse 154 Indigenous people had suffered at St. Anne’s in Fort Albany, Ont.Those lawsuits were all resolved without a trial but before the government settled a broader class action brought by Indian residential school survivors in 2007. As part of the class-action settlement, the government set up a compensation scheme for survivors known as the independent adjudication process. The two St. Anne’s plaintiffs in this week’s appeal – known as H-15019 and K-10106 – were both initially denied compensation but succeeded after a legal fight and reviews. They maintain the difficulties they had in advancing their claims can be attributed to the government’s failure to disclose all relevant documents it had in its possession. They also argue other claimants may have run into the same issue.“Canada failed the St. Anne’s survivors and misled the adjudicators,” the plaintiffs say in written Appeal Court submissions. “Canada continues to fail in the duties it owes to the St. Anne’s survivors, the adjudicators, and the administration of justice by refusing to produce transcripts from examinations from discovery that are part of the factual narrative of St. Anne’s IRS.”The federal government, the plaintiffs argue, has no legal basis to claim “settlement privilege” to keep the civil documents secret. They say such privilege applies only to negotiations toward settlement of a lawsuit, not to sworn testimony and factual evidence contained in transcripts that are a normal part of such litigation.St. Anne’s, which the plaintiffs describe as “veritable house of horrors where, for generations, indigenous children suffered unspeakable physical and sexual abuses,” has long been the subject of criminal and civil proceedings. Courts in Ontario and British Columbia have issued close to 20 separate decisions and endorsements related to the compensation process involving the now-defunct school. In January 2014, Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Perell ordered Canada to disclose all transcripts of criminal or civil proceedings related to St. Anne’s. Six months later, court documents show, the government simply wrote Perell to say it would not be handing over civil transcripts on the grounds they were confidential under the doctrine of “settlement privilege.”Last April in a new decision, Perell concluded Canada was not obliged to produce the civil transcripts _ the ruling now under appeal. For its part, the Canadian government maintains the Appeal Court should not interfere. It asserts the issues are moot because H-15019’s claim has now been settled, and Perell was right to find that K-10106 had no standing to raise the matter.“In addition to legal arguments, the appellants make numerous unsupportable allegations that do not withstand any scrutiny of the evidence,” Ottawa asserts in its factum. “The appellants are wrong to allege that previous disclosure issues involving St. Anne’s…amounted to ‘material suppression of evidence.”’Intervening in H-15019’s appeal, lawyers acting as independent counsel under the Indian residential schools settlement argue Canada’s assertion of settlement privilege has never been recognized in law. They also argue “other claims from St. Anne’s that are yet to be heard could still be affected by the failure to disclose the civil transcripts.”The case is expected to be heard on Tuesday and Wednesday.last_img read more

Cong decides not to field candidates in 5 seats

first_imgKolkata: The Congress has decided not to field candidates in five seats — Bishunupur, Diamond Harbour, Asansol, Bolpur and Tamluk— as a “goodwill gesture.”The Left Front did not field candidates in four seats from where Congress nominees had been elected in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Holding the Left Front responsible for the failure to ink an electoral alliance, veteran Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharya said: “We wanted a complete alliance. Discussions were on with the Left Front. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari Puja”We want to defeat the Trinamool Congress and the BJP and for this total alliance was necessary. “Why did the Left field candidate in the seats where Congress candidates had got more votes. We believe in political courtesy.” Left Front chairman Biman Bose had said on Tuesday that the party would field candidates in four seats from where Congress candidates had won in 2014 polls if the party did not respond. Political experts said in view of the alliance there would be triangular fight in the nine seats, four seats from where Congress candidates had won in 2014 polls and five seats where Congress did not field any candidate. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highwayHowever, in Raigunj and Murshidabad the Congress will fight against CPI(M) candidates Mohammad Selim and Bodrudojja Khan. Selim had won by 1,634 votes only. He got 3.17 lakh votes while Deepa Das Munshi got 3.15 lakh votes in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The first ever electoral alliance between the Congress and the CPI(M) which was formed in 2016 before the Assembly election did not go well. The Left Front had managed to get only 32 seats of which CPI(M) got 26 seats while RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI got three, two and one seat, respectively. Political experts said the alliance between the Congress and the CPI(M) was not likely to work in 2014 as for hardcore Congress supporters voting for CPI(M) was “impossible” and the same logic applies to hardcore CPI(M) supporters also. It is a political compulsion of both the parties to stay together as the organisation of both the Congress and the CPI(M) has become very weak over the years. Even CPI(M) leaders admitted that it would not be possible for the party to man all the polling stations. There are 77,000 odd polling stations in Bengal. The political experts felt that alliance or no alliance Trinamool Congress would be benefitted in the ensuing election.last_img read more

Ohio State looking to hold off Michigan in Big Ten Championship finale

The Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion played host to the men’s swimming and diving Big Ten Championships and OSU swimmers gave the home crowd something to cheer about on Friday.“I’ve never experienced a night like this as a coach,” coach Bill Wadley said. To find a better night in Ohio State swimming history, one would have to go back at least 50 years, Wadley said.Coming into Friday night, the Buckeyes were tied with Michigan, but by the end of the night things changed. The Buckeyes started the night off with a bang, and kept it going, wrapping up Friday’s action in first place. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, OSU was able to bring home the gold and take sole possession of the lead. The relay was made up of Joel Elber, Andrew Olson, Lincoln Fahrbach and Tim Phillips.“It’s a really good momentum builder,” Olson said. The Buckeyes lost their lead for a moment, but the Buckeyes stayed positive. In the next event, sophomore Austin Mudd placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley while teammate Justin Farra took place sixth in the same event. Both swimmers were able to improve from their morning swim. The next event was a battle of OSU against Michigan. Both teams had three swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly. OSU performed well, but Michigan was able to outscore the Buckeyes.Even though the Buckeyes were outscored, the team was happy about the finishes by all three swimmers. Phillips finished second, Quincy Lee finished fifth and Fahrbach finished in seventh. In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Buckeyes came close to a sweep. OSU was able to finish in first, second and fourth place. Junior Elliott Keefer was able to bring home the gold for OSU while senior Sam Pelkey brought home the silver. Senior Dani Malnik was just one tenth of a second from tying for third. She placed fourth. In that same event, Michigan had only one person in the top eight.OSU finished the night off with a bang. Sophomore Andrew Elliott placed first in the 100-yard backstroke.By the end of the swimming portion of the meet on Friday, the Buckeyes had 592.5 points to take over first place. Michigan checked in second with 512.5 points. The Buckeyes may have the lead but a Big Ten Championship is not in the bag.The Buckeyes will be in the pool Saturday to try to fend off Michigan and bring home a Big Ten Championship. read more

Football Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins makes case for playing time

Ohio State redshirt freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins (7) waits for a snap in the fourth quarter of the 2017 OSU- Army game on Sep. 16. OSU won 38-7. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorThough he remains unlikely to unseat J.T. Barrett as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, Dwayne Haskins took the first snaps of his career Saturday on the Buckeyes’ final drive of their 38-7 win against Army. The redshirt freshman did not disappoint. Haskins completed all four of his passes for 46 yards, zipping the ball to four separate receivers on each throw and driving the Buckeyes to Army’s 10-yard line. “I thought he performed well when he was in there,” coach Urban Meyer said after the game. “He was 4-for-4. I wanted to throw him more, but you just didn’t want to do something silly.”His big-armed, pocket passing style starkly contrasted with Barrett’s dual-threat approach. In Haskins’ only drive, he completed passes of 14 and 15 yards. In the rest of the game, Barrett completed six passes for at least 14 yards.Meyer praised Haskins’ quick release after the game and said Haskins might have had a chance to score on his only drive, but did not want to score another touchdown and run the score up.After Ohio State’s first loss of the season, a decisive 31-16 defeat to Oklahoma, Meyer said he hoped to find Haskins some reps in regular-season games with the goal being to prepare the quarterback to be “game-ready.” Meyer did not believe Haskins earned that designation last week and believes he still has to work to earn the tag.Redshirt freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. (7) warms up prior to the season opener against Indiana. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorIn Meyer’s mind, a large experience gap exists between practice reps and game reps, and another lies in whether the game reps occur under pressure. At the end of the game against Army, Haskins did not have much to lose.“I’ve done that before where you put a guy in in the second quarter of a game,” Meyer said. “We’re not at that point yet. But you’d like to do that.”Whether Haskins earns earlier playing time to test his readiness or not, he is likely to remain backup quarterback. Instead of a battle to become the starter, he might re-enter a competition with redshirt sophomore Joe Burrow, who is about ready to return to action.Burrow broke a bone in his throwing hand near the end of fall camp. Before the past two games, he threw passes in pregame warmups, but he has yet to be listed on a depth chart due to the injury.“We’ve got to make some decisions who is the first one in there,” Meyer said. “Last year was very important to get Joe in the game and he did pretty well when he was in there as well. So, that is so important for backup quarterback spot.”In the spring and fall, Burrow and Haskins entrenched themselves in a battle to back up Barrett. In the spring game, Burrow went 14-for-22 for 262 yards with three touchdowns, while Haskins completed 26-of-37 passes and added three touchdowns. The primary backup last season, Burrow played in five games and completed 22-of-28 passes for 226 yards and threw two touchdown passes. A dual threat, similar to Barrett, Burrow rushed 12 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. read more

This Ceasefire Weekend House Music Heals

first_imgBy Sean Yoes, AFRO Baltimore Editor, syoes@afro.comSo far in 2019 Baltimore has been averaging almost a murder a day, 26 homicides as of Jan. 26.There have been six days with multiple homicides. There was a homicide every day from Jan. 8 – Jan. 13. We’ve gotten off to a bad start after registering moderately lower crime rates across the board in 2018.It seems Ceasefire Weekend is coming right on time, as usual.“So, the movement itself is based on the idea that Baltimore can collectively put a pause on violence, if we decide as a city, as a community we can do that. We can give one another at least 72 hours,” said Letrice Gant, a co-founder of Baltimore Ceasefire 365, during a recent conversation I had with her at Impact Hub on North Ave.“The other part of that, the other component we try to stress to people is this idea about celebrating life,” Gant added. “So, one of the things we encourage people to do during Ceasefire Weekend is to plan what we call life affirming events. Life affirming events can be something as intimate as you sitting down with family members and having a conversation about the context of violence and how it impacts you directly.”The essence of Baltimore Ceasefire and perhaps the main reason the Ceasefire Weekends have been so successful (every Ceasefire weekend has seen a significant decrease in homicides and shootings), is that it is grass roots and  community-driven. Ceasefire is not some lumbering entity hovering over the community, handing down edicts to end violence, which the residents of the mostly Black, mostly poor communities most affected by violence would promptly ignore. Ceasefire is of, from and for those communities most impacted by murder and mayhem and the residents of those communities are most important in the battle to change the city’s injurious trajectory. From the beginning (Aug. 21), I’ve thrown my personal and professional support behind the Ceasefire movement led by Erricka Bridgeford, Gant, Ogun Gordy, Jakia Jason, Michelle Herring and Darnyle Wharton. But, this Ceasefire Weekend I’m in the game for real–along with many others creating space for peace and healing.Me and my partner Tiffany Ginyard, (the AFRO’s new managing editor), who happens to be one of the smartest, most talented young people I know, are producing “House Music Heals,” a “life affirming event” at the burgeoning Impact Hub on North Ave.I may not be totally objective here but, House Music Heals is unique in the sense we are convening a community conversation about the impact of violence on our young people, as well as a traditional Baltimore House Party. Both elements of our forum lend themselves to healing. Our conversation about the impact of ubiquitous violence (more than 50 percent of 2018 homicides were people aged 13-30) features five dynamic young leaders. Lauren Bell, a 10th grade a multi-talented artist and writer; Deleciea Greene and Keyma Flight, members of the nationally respected Dewmore Baltimore Youth Poetry Team; Khaneef Goode, a West Baltimore community organizer and Ras Tahuti Missouri, another powerhouse spoken word artist.I first wrote about Missouri in July 2016, when he reflected on the death of murdered West Baltimore rap artist “Lor Scoota” (Tyriece Watson). “He was trying to get away from the street life, he was trying to get away from all of that,” Missouri, who was 15 at the time told me back in 2016. “That was his ticket out of the city…rapping about what he lived…and it’s sad that the reality and what he lived turned around to be his downfall.”And it is a divine twist of fate that we are also facilitating a House Music set across the street from the mythic Odell’s nightclub. Although Odell’s has been shuttered for decades, the creative energy is crackling once again on North Avenue. Our House Music party features two phenomenal DJs: Henry Da Man (Henry Featherstone) and Sunny T (Monica Taylor). I’ve known Taylor since we were both in Middle School and although she’s always had a deep love of music, she just started DJ’ing a few years ago. Featherstone, who I refer to as “the Professa,” is one of the most knowledgeable DJ’s in Baltimore, a bastion of world class House Music talent.Sean Yoes (Courtesy Photo)I wrote about “The Healing Power of House Music” in October 2015, when I referenced the legendary “Deep Sugar” House party, during a special set by Ultra Nate and Lisa Moody shortly after the Uprising of April 2015.I wrote that Deep Sugar was a spiritual salve for many of the city’s disenfranchised; people of color, the LGBT community and many others. We need that healing power every day.Sean Yoes is the AFRO’s Baltimore editor and the author of Baltimore After Freddie Gray: Real Stories From One of America’s Great Imperiled Cities.last_img read more
