Partners Set Up Coal Transshipment Hub in Vietnam

first_imgzoom An alliance of three partners will position a Floating Transfer Platform (FTP) in South Vietnam capable of discharging and loading all bulk carriers up to and including 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax. The partners, including Vietnam’s coal importer Welhunt, bulk carrier shipping firm Oldendorff Carriers and Vietnam-based logistics provider Haivan, said that this platform “will be the first and only multi-user facility in Vietnam.”Able to work at a discharge rate of up to 25,000 metric tonnes per day, the FTP is specifically designed to handle growing coal imports. The Floating Transfer Platform positioned in Vietnam has two cranes, hoppers and conveyor belts and will be able to tranship the coal from large ocean going vessels into shallow draft barges. By using the largest and most economical vessels, the coal can be sourced and transported from any port around the world. The barges will deliver the coal directly to the jetties across Vietnam and potentially other nearby markets in an environmentally friendly manner, Oldendorff said.Vietnam is currently facing a significant challenge to receive and export growing volumes of bulk cargoes due to shallow ports and relatively poor port infrastructure. Coal imports in particular have grown more than 100% per year from 2010 to 2017 and the total volume of coal imported is projected to reach 60 million tonnes per year by 2025.Image Courtesy: Oldendorfflast_img read more

The 2014-15 Warriors were astonishingly balanced; they had the NBA’s second-best offense and led the league in defensive efficiency. This season’s version, however, was first in offensive rating by a healthy margin but sixth-best on defense — good, but not great. The resulting team was ever-so-slightly better, but less symmetrical. In the playoffs, though, the Warriors’ defense has helped the team battle through Stephen Curry’s absence and reclaim the mantle of NBA title favorite. Here’s the offensive and defensive efficiency of this season’s playoff teams relative to average, accounting for the regular-season performance of a team’s opponents:1These numbers also factor in home-court advantage (roughly 2.8 points per 100 possessions) and the championship leverage of every game. 5Portland Trail Blazers5-6+3.9-1.7+2.2 Team efficiencies adjusted for strength of schedule using opponents‘ regular-season stats.Source: Basketball-Reference.com The Cavs have blown away their playoff peers so far, but Golden State deserves credit as well for posting the best defensive performance of any remaining team. Indeed, the Warriors’ ratings look a lot like the balanced attack that drove their championship last season — even though Curry has suited up for just six of the team’s 12 games. When the Warriors require outbursts of unadulterated offensive brilliance — like, say, 12 points in 82 seconds or 17 points in an overtime period — Curry has been happy to oblige. But Golden State has also held the mighty Oklahoma City Thunder offense to an efficiency rate 10 points per 100 possessions below their regular-season standard through two games of the Western Conference finals. Even on nights when the Warrior offense isn’t operating at peak productivity, such as Game 1 against OKC, the defense can keep the game competitive into its final minutes. With Draymond Green leading the way, Golden State’s D in this series has already forced the Thunder into two of their 19 worst games of the season according to quantified shot quality, a player tracking-based measure that accounts for the location and conditions under which every shot is taken. In games 1 and 2, Kevin Durant’s shot quality has been his sixth- and 21st-worst of the year, and Russell Westbrook has been limited to his 31st and 24th-worst games. If it’s seemed like Russ and KD have been swimming upstream for long stretches in the series so far, this is why. The duo’s effective field goal percentage in the series is just 43 percent, far below their combined regular-season mark of 53 percent. There’s still plenty of time for the Thunder to wrest control of the series back from Golden State. But to do it, Oklahoma City will have to go through the Warrior defense, a unit that’s back to being as sturdy as it was during the team’s title run last season.Check out our latest NBA predictions. read more

Ledecky Has Company In A Renewed Assault On Swimmings Records

Given her 100 splits (not reflected), and 200 and 800 races still to come (there is unfortunately no 1,500-meter women’s event at the Olympics), expect this curve to fall even further into the absurd.1. Adam Peaty — 100-meter breaststrokeAdam Peaty may not have the most versatile program, and certainly didn’t generate as much buzz as Ledecky or Hosszu, but for one race at least, he was every bit as dominant. He initially set a record in his preliminary heat, which generally bodes well. His final time of 57.13 won his race by 1.56 seconds and broke his pre-Olympic record by 0.79 seconds, and puts him 1.33 seconds clear of his next-fastest competitor ever. For a 100-meter race, this is crazy good – even against this crazy competition. To show how much so, I plotted the top 50 times since 2010 for each of these four records, in standard deviations from the mean:2Note that since these are the top values of a huge sample of swimmers, these deviations don’t perfectly correspond to the insanely low probabilities you’d expect from 3-4 SD events if the underlying times were normally distributed. The dynamics for the specific probabilities would be governed by a Gumbel “extreme value” distribution. I’m just using standard deviations here to put all of the events on the same scale. Ledecky’s 3:56.46 was 4.77 seconds faster than second-place Jazz Carlin, and nearly 2 seconds faster than her own 2014 record (3:58.37). It’s over 4 seconds faster than any woman has swum in the post-ban era (4:00.65 by bronze-medalist Leah Smith this year). The only other woman ever to swim below 4 minutes in this event is Federica Pellegrini, who did it in 2009. Ledecky is getting closer and closer to making 400 meters a sprint distance: Her speed of 59.1 seconds per 100 meters is closer to the average speed of the 50 fastest 200-meter swimmers than it is to the average of the 50 fastest 400-meter swimmers. Her speed in the 800 is already faster than all but a handful of women in the 400, and her speed in the 1,500 is faster than anyone’s but hers in the 800: We’re on the ground in Rio covering the 2016 Summer Olympics. Check out all our coverage here. While Michael Phelps’s winning of his 19th gold medal may be the feel-good story of the swimming pool not involving Yusra Mardini so far, the most significant development of the opening weekend of swimming is surely the sport’s renewed assault on the record books. The ban of full-body non-textile (“LZR”-style) swimsuits at the end of 2009 had a dramatic effect on the pace of records broken in swimming. Of 32 events contested in the 2008 Olympics, 27 had records broken in 2009; in 2010, none did. But time marches on, and athletes improve. The London games in 2012 saw records broken in eight events — a far cry from the 19 events that saw records fall in Beijing, but a step in the right direction. If the first weekend of action in Rio is any indication, the swimming world has recovered, with a vengeance. Of the eight swimming events completed so far, five have led to world records, including one of two relays (women’s 4×100), and four of the six individual events (all three women’s and one of three men’s). Here are the most dominant individual swims from the first two days of competition, ranked:4. Sarah Sjostrom — 100-meter butterflySwedish 22-year-old Sarah Sjostrom is a name to remember. In particular, she has the fastest 200-meter freestyle time of any woman since 2012, and is thus probably the most likely to play spoiler to Katie Ledecky’s hopes of winning three individual golds when the two face off in that event Tuesday.Sjostrom looks even stronger after kicking off her meet with a world record. She originally set the 100-meter butterfly record in 2009 (at age 15!) but wouldn’t match her pre-ban time again until 2015, when she reclaimed her record from Dana Vollmer (who had taken it in 2012).Sjostrom finished in 55.48, nearly a full second clear of second place, and a half-second clear of the next-fastest woman ever. Usually, that would be a pretty amazing showing, but this was a big weekend for amazing showings.3. Katinka Hosszu — 400-meter individual medleyKatinka Hosszu, the 27-year old Hungarian, is the only swimmer on this list who broke a record that wasn’t already her own. She very nearly broke it in her preliminary heat, and then destroyed it in the final: LOL Katie Ledecky was celebrating and people hadn’t finished yet pic.twitter.com/qCaDbu2kSg— Isaac (@WorldofIsaac) August 8, 2016 Ledecky’s 400-meter race was a thing of beauty, especially considering that 400 meters is supposed to be her third-best distance. But in terms of sheer field-busting dominance, Peaty’s wild win over just two lengths of the pool takes the weekend. Hosszu won the race by nearly 5 seconds – finishing in 4:26.36 – and cleared Ye Shiwen’s record by nearly 2 seconds. Though few expected a performance this great, Hosszu didn’t come out of nowhere. She was world champion in this event in 2009 and 2015, and has held the short-course record1There’s a separate set of records for times set in 25-meter pools, though most major competitions use 50-meter pools. in it on and off since 2013.2. Katie Ledecky — 400-meter freestyleIf there was any distance at which it seemed Katie Ledecky’s best times might have been flattening out, it’s the 400-meter freestyle, where she hadn’t broken the world record since 2014. Following unexpectedly fast 100 meter splits in the 4×100 relays and almost breaking her record in her preliminary heat, however, another record seemed inevitable. And then this happened: read more

Vox Media Buys Curbed Network

first_imgAll things considered, it seems to be a fairly small addition for Vox who’s core properties get more than 10-times the traffic of the Curbed Network. Vox has increased their numbers significantly in a short time though—almost 90 percent year-over-year—so the company is well positioned to help the Curbed sites grow. For Jim Bankoff, CEO of Vox, there’s already value on the ad side.“Both Vox and Curbed value storytelling and as a result have attracted the otherwise hard to reach young, affluent, social consumers,” he tells The New York Times. “We think this combined expanded platform will clearly attract premium advertisers.”The model is apparently working. Lockhart Steele, founder of the Curbed Network and editor-in-chief of the three sites, tells Mashable the site has been profitable since 2010.Steele will remain in his current role, though he expects operations to be moved to Vox’s New York offices.— Weeks after securing up to $40 million in a funding round, Vox Media is spending some of the windfall. The digital media company behind SB Nation, The Verge and Polygon has purchased the Curbed Network for a reported $20 to $30 million in cash and stock. The acquisition includes three locally-focused blog sites centered on real estate (Curbed), restaurants (Eater) and shopping (Racked) that publish in 32 markets and get about 5 million monthly unique visitors, per Quantcast metrics. The market-by-market approach is reminiscent of Vox’s largest property, sports site SB Nation, which relies on individualized team blogs for most of its content. Bengaluru startup Niramai to develop AIbased tool to detect river blindness disease

first_imgBengaluru-based deep-tech start-up Niramai announced to develop cutting edge Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based software tool to help doctors detect river blindness early.River blindness aka Onchocerciasis is dangerous and yet most neglected tropical skin disease in the world. It is caused by a parasitic filarial worm, Onchocerca volvulus, which is usually hosted by the blackflies ( Simulium damnosum ) which breed in fast-flowing rivers. When human get bitten by the black flies, the tiny parasite gets transmitted to the body and mostly settle in nodules beneath the skin and in some instances go deep inside the muscles of the infected person. If not treated, it can stay there for up to 15 years and in worst cases, the larvae of the parasite can migrate into the eye and cause blindness. Adult Black Fly (Simulium yahense) with (Onchocerca volvulus) emerging from the insect’s antenna. The parasite is responsible for the disease known as en:River Blindness in Africa. Sample was chemically fixed and critical point dried, then observed using conventional scanning electron microscopy.Wikimedia Commons (screen-grab)Understanding the severity of the disease, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has funded Niramai to develop technology to detect River Blindness disease early so that patients get timely medication before they develop vision disability. The company will be using its in-house innovative AI-based Thermalytix technique, a non-invasive detection method to help assess the efficacy of new drugs being developed to control the disease by killing the adult worms, potentially accelerating the elimination of river blindness, which has today infects close to 17 million people in Africa.”Onchocerciasis, more commonly known as river blindness, is the world’s second leading infectious cause of blindness. NIRAMAI technology can be a valuable tool to detect infectious live worms in a non-invasive way and help with the global effort to eliminate this very disabling disease.” About half a million people are blind or visually impaired due to the disease which is caused by a parasitic worm living under the skin in humans, spread by black fly bites. In addition to blinding, onchocerciasis is a chronic systemic disease capable of causing extensive and disfiguring skin disease, chronic itching, musculoskeletal complaints, weight loss, alteration in host immune responses and possibly epilepsy and growth impairment. Onchocerciasis can have a considerable impact on social relationships in poorest communities. Therefore, its control and elimination have been a high priority,” Professor Dr Christopher L King from The Centre for Global Health and Diseases, Cleveland, who is collaborating with Niramai said in a statement. (Left-Right) Nidhi Mathur and Dr Geetha Manjunath, co-founders of Bengaluru’s deep-tech start-up firm, Niramai.Press KitIt can be noted that Thermalytix technique combines thermal imaging with artificial intelligence which is already under use to detect early-stage breast cancer in many hospitals today.Niramai is a startup offering a radiation-free, non-invasive, non-touch, breast cancer screening solution. MCFL shares fall on suspicion of irregularities and mismanagement in investment

first_imgMangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd., (MCFL), a company in which Vijay Mallya’s UB Group still holds about 22 percent, saw its shares plunge by almost 9 percent on the BSE on Monday in response to suspicion of “irregularities and mismanagement” by the company in transactions valued at Rs. 216 crore. This, even as capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has widened its probe into the UB Group for possible siphoning off funds by the promoters and insider trading. The MCF stock was trading at Rs. 42.10, down 7.37 percent at around 12.30 p.m. on the BSE.On Friday, after trading hours, MCF said in a regulatory filing that auditing firm Ernst & Young LLP informed the company’s board of likely “irregularities and mismanagement” in two separate transactions with Bangalore Beverages Limited and United Breweries (Holdings) Limited involving about Rs. 216 crore. “Upon completion of its investigations, M/s Emsl & Young LLP has made a presentation to lbe Board af Directors at its meeting held on May 06, 2016 to the effect that the aforesaid transactions may have involved irregularities and elements of mismanagement in the Company,” MCF informed the BSE.”The company is taking necessary legal advice in connection with the findings of Ernst & Young LLP,” it added.MCF had invested Rs. 200 crore in Bangalore Beverages by subscribing to its preference shares and made advances to United Breweries Holdings Limited of which Rs. 16.68 crore was due as on March 31, 2016.MCF was a UB Group company till last year when Saroj Poddar-led Zuari Group took a 53 percent stake in the company and also appointed Ernst & Young LLP to probe the transactions.Meanwhile, the probe into the UB Group has widened with SEBI now widening its probe to look at likely siphoning off funds by the promoters and insider trading. The matter is also being flagged to other agencies and government departments, including the Corporate Affairs Ministry and its agency Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) for white-collar crimes, the Press Trust of India quoted a senior government official as saying. [1 lakh = 100,000 | 1 crore = 10 million | 100 crore = 1 billion]last_img read more

Son of slain Malta whistleblower assails complicit PM

first_imgA person lights a candle during a candlelight vigil in Sliema, on October 16, 2017, in tribute to late journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia who was killed by a car bomb close to her home in Bidnija, Malta. Photo: AFPThe son of a murdered Maltese journalist on Tuesday accused prime minister Joseph Muscat of being complicit in his mother’s death in a grisly killing that sent shockwaves across Europe.Matthew Caruana Galizia, himself a journalist involved in digesting the Panama Papers, said his mother had been assassinated for doing her job in investigating alleged corruption. In an emotional post on his Facebook page, the son of whistleblowing blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia accused Muscat of filling his office with crooks and creating a culture of impunity that had turned Malta into a “mafia island”.The case looks set to increase scrutiny of Malta by its partners in the European Union, some of whom have already expressed concern over the island’s light-touch regulation of its banking sector and a controversial investment scheme that gives wealthy individuals access to an EU passport. The European Commission said Tuesday that it was horrified by what it termed a likely “targeted attack”.”This is a horrible event, a major thing that needs to be investigated, and clarified, and justice needs to be brought,” commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said.Caruana Galizia, a veteran journalist once described as a “one-woman Wikileaks”, used her widely read blog to make a series of detailed allegations of corruption in Muscat’s inner circle, some based on the Panama Papers data leak. Her killing has triggered an outpouring of grief on the island of 430,000 people, with thousands expected for a second round of commemorations on Tuesday afternoon in the fortress capital Valletta. She was the fourth person to die in a Malta car bombing in just over a year, though previous attacks were all linked to criminal feuds and did not generate anything like the shock created by Caruana’s death.- ‘Inferno’ -“I am never going to forget, running around the inferno in the field, trying to figure out a way to open the door, the horn of the car still blaring, screaming at two policemen who turned up with a single fire extinguisher to use it,” Matthew Caruana wrote.”They stared at me. ‘I’m sorry, there is nothing we can do”, one of them said. “I looked down and there were my mother’s body parts all around me. I realised they were right, it was hopeless.”Muscat has described the killing as “barbaric” and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice with the help of FBI investigators. That pledge was dismissed by the victim’s son, who said one of the police officers involved in investigating the murder had celebrated his mother’s death online.”A culture of impunity has been allowed to flourish by the government in Malta,” he wrote.”It is of little comfort for the Prime Minister of this country to say that he will ‘not rest’ until the perpetrators are found, when he heads a government that encouraged that same impunity.”First he filled his office with crooks, then he filled the police with crooks and imbeciles, then he filled the courts with crooks and incompetents.”If the institutions were already working, there would be no assassination to investigate — and my brothers and I would still have a mother.”- Assange offers reward -The judge in charge of investigating the murder stepped aside from the case Tuesday following objections from the Caruana Galizia family that she was too close to the Labour Party administration.Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera had been accused of misconduct by the blogger and had threatened her with libel proceedings.Caruana Galizia’s death came four months after Muscat won a landslide victory in elections that were called early after she accused his wife of taking kickbacks from Azerbaijan’s ruling family and hiding the cash in a secret Panama bank account. The claims, which Muscat denies, were the latest in a string of scandals on the island based on information leaked from the records of the Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca. The so-called Panama Papers revealed how wealthy individuals around the world, including a number of politicians, used shell companies based in the Latin American nation and other tax havens to hide cash.Among those exposed were Keith Schembri, Muscat’s chief of staff, and Konrad Mizzi, a government minister. The premier resisted pressure to dismiss the two men, insisting their accounts were related to their private business and they had done nothing illegal.Wikileaks founder Julian Assange offered a reward of 20,000 euros ($23,500) to anyone who provided information about the attack leading to the conviction of those responsible.last_img read more

Rep Hoitenga bill cuts government red tape regarding line relocation requirements

first_img06Dec Rep. Hoitenga bill cuts government red tape regarding line relocation requirements The House Communications and Technology Committee on Tuesday advanced a bill proposed by state Rep. Michele Hoitenga of Manton limiting requirements needed for broadband expansion work in rights-of-way.The bill waives permit fees and required studies for telecommunication and video service providers when relocating lines. County road commissions have jurisdiction over rights-of-way and often require permits, inspections and project reviews due to the close proximity of lines and mains beneath the ground. Businesses can be charged fees even as the relocation is coming at the behest of the locality. ÂHoitenga said current law is needlessly burdensome and the requests end up slowing the process down.“When looking to improve and supply broadband access throughout the state, especially in rural areas, we need to eliminate measures that are hampering those efforts,” said Hoitenga, who chairs the House Communications and Technology Committee. “This bill gets us closer to ensuring that broadband is readily available and affordable for all of our residents. That is what I strive for every day through my work on this committee.”HB 5098 also mandates a uniform notification policy for line relocation. Local governments must provide their request to providers at least one year in advance.“More advanced notice will lead to better communication between our communities and businesses for the good of residents,” said Hoitenga. “It’s time we allow this process to run more smoothly. When expanded broadband projects fall behind, Michigan falls behind as a state.”The bill moves to the full House for further consideration. Categories: Hoitenga News,Newslast_img read more
