first_imgWASHINGTON, D.C. — The Padres are growing up before our eyes, the Dodgers suddenly look fallible and the Rockies are a shadow of their former selves. The first two-plus weeks of the season offered a slew of surprising developments in the National League West, but the Giants didn’t contribute many. Through 17 games, the Giants are who we (experts, media and fans) thought they would be.The familiar, predictable script the Giants have been following isn’t going to produce a contender, but a few …last_img

Ramon Laureano honored as AL Player of the Week

first_imgHOUSTON — In the hours following the announcement of Ramon Laureano’s American League Player of the Week honor, Laureano took a light snooze in the A’s clubhouse at Minute Maid Park. A major series against Oakland’s toughest division foe was afoot, and no award would interrupt his unorthodox intense zen.“It’s cool,” Laureano said a while later of the award. “I enjoyed it for one minute because Bob told me to, but got to keep moving on. Today’s a new series, very important.”That’s typical …last_img

South Africa’s first vegan magazine

first_imgMedia24 has launched South Africa’s first vegan focused magazine, The Vegan Life. Besides vegan friendly recipes, there are also informative articles on a wide range of relevant topics, from getting enough protein to buying cruelty-free beauty products. The Vegan Life launches on 30 January 2017. (Image: Screengrab via digital version of the magazine)Priya PitamberIn the newly launched magazine, The Vegan Life, numerous questions relating to the lifestyle are tastefully answered:How can a vegan include more protein in their diet?Do vegans need to take supplements? How to respond to frequently asked questions? What is safe and not safe for a vegan to eat? Those who follow a vegan diet exclude meat, poultry, eggs, dairy and other animal related products from their menus.“The huge shift towards veganism is really interesting,” said Marianne Erasmus, publisher of The Vegan Life.“It reflects a growing awareness of our impact on the world because the basis of veganism is not only about what is good for the individual, but also what is best for the planet.“We support the decision to live ethically and the activism behind it, and are very proud to launch the first vegan magazine in South Africa.”Thokozani Mashigo has been a vegan for just over a year, eating organic, plant-based food. “I adopted an alkaline-based diet which meant cutting out acid-based foods, of which animal-based foods are a part.”But his decision has not been without its difficulties.“Being a vegan,” he said, “especially a black vegan, posed many challenges for me, from explaining such a foreign concept to friends and family to finding suitable eateries that cater for vegans, to understanding the labelling on almost every single item of food I purchase.”The magazine got his attention, he said, by the cover because of the “beautifully shot food and the layout of the magazine”.“I immediately got the earthy, natural organic feeling that comes with being a vegan,” he said.He enjoyed that the magazine contained an abundance of information. “I loved the answers to the many questions one asks oneself when embarking on such an unpopular diet choice.”The list of vegan-friendly restaurants was also appreciated, as was the article about which supplements vegans could buy.“This magazine has helped me to understand veganism even better, to plan my meals and the ingredients, and it has helped me from a nutrition point of view.”Mashigo is also interested in trying out the dessert recipes.Animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or Peta, said 2016 would be #TheYearofVegan and it was that exactly, reads the magazine.“In the UK, where veganism is widely regarded as one of the fastest-growing lifestyle trends, the number of vegans rose by more than 360% over the past 10 years.“Here in South Africa, although we don’t have the exact statistics, veganism is clearly a path more and more people are choosing to take.”@JoziStyle @media24 @XXXSHEWOLFXXX @TheLifesWay Looks great! TVs, Cars, AR – Oh My! Hot Tech Trends For Entrepreneurs At CES

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… chris cameron A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Today marks the official start to the 2010 Consumer Electronics Showcase in Las Vegas where all of the biggest electronics manufacturers show off their coolest and newest products. While CES is mainly a gadget show, entrepreneurs looking for the next big thing should pay close attention to the innovative ideas being pushed into the consumer market. The big show is just getting underway, but we are already seeing some trends emerge that could point to new opportunities for startups in 2010.Televisions On everyone’s CES prediction list this year are new TV technologies, including 3D viewing and the apparent rebirth of Web TV. Recently, various set-top boxes have brought web apps into our living rooms, including the Roku player, and BluRay players with Netflix, YouTube and Pandora integration. As we reported earlier this week, Skype has partnered with LG and Panasonic to integrate their service with new Internet-connected HDTVs. In addition, Internet media aggregator Boxee is marketing their brand new Boxee Box set-top device, and Yahoo! announced plans today to expand its presence in the living room. As more media and applications migrate onto televisions, startups will have the opportunity to find new niches and provided services on these new products.Automobiles Another trend is the implementation of new technologies into automobiles, and as we mentioned yesterday, Ford’s new MyFord Touch is leading the way. By placing LCD touch screens in the dashboard and turning the car into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, Ford is opening doors for new platforms in the automobile. Current companies are already taking advantage of the the growing auto-tech industry. Streaming music service Pandora recently announced a partnership with Pioneer to bring Internet radio to your dashboard – albeit for a hefty $1,200 price tag. When the day comes that everyone has a connected car that can sync and share data, startups will be needed for services that organize and make use of these new forms of information. Augmented Reality And finally, while we may not see a plethora of new gadgets in this space at CES, augmented reality looks to make a huge splash in the consumer electronics market in 2010. Right now, most AR experiences are on cell phones or desktop computers, but fans of augmented reality expect to see some Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) or new transparent LCD screens in the near future. The potential for augmented reality has been flying under the radar for years, and only in recent days have improvements in technology allowed for it to begin to flourish. AR is a quickly expanding field with many opportunities for innovation, and is a field in which startups could quickly find a foothold.center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#start#startups 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

McGregor’s biggest rival: ‘No way’ Conor beats Mayweather

first_imgView comments While McGregor’s win ended Aldo’s 10-year winning streak, nobody found it to be as utterly improbable as a potential victory over Mayweather (49-0), the most successful boxer of his generation. McGregor worked relentlessly to get under Aldo’s skin during the months before their fight, and Aldo recognizes the similarities in the mental game McGregor is playing against Mayweather.McGregor calls himself “Mystic Mac” due to his ability to predict the results of his fights. While he has been wrong before — such as in his submission loss to Nate Diaz last year — he has shown a remarkable ability to back up his boasts with results.McGregor vowed to stop Mayweather within four rounds during their uproarious promotional tour last month, but Aldo is among those who don’t think even McGregor believes it. Aldo saw the posturing and insult-trading as something else entirely.“It’s a joke,” Aldo said. “He’s just looking for the money.”Aldo spoke while in Los Angeles to support Brazilian boxer Esquiva Falcao, who fought on the undercard of Vasyl Lomachenko’s victory over Miguel Marriaga.ADVERTISEMENT NGCP on security risk: Chinese just technical advisers Robredo should’ve resigned as drug czar after lack of trust issue – Panelo LATEST STORIES “There is no way McGregor can defeat Mayweather,” Aldo said. “Mayweather has done this his entire life, and it’s a different sport.”The way Aldo sees it, McGregor has obvious motivations for the spectacle that will occur Aug. 26 in Las Vegas — and those motivations don’t include boxing glory.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSWin or don’t eat: the Philippines’ poverty-driven, world-beating pool stars“After the Mayweather fight, he’ll get lots of millions of dollars,” Aldo said. “Probably he’ll never fight again.”Aldo was the most dominant champion in mixed martial arts until McGregor set his sights on the Brazilian star several years ago.
