Eastern athletes ready to shine

first_imgArch-rivals St Mary High and Buff Bay High are again expected to fight for the title at the second meet of the 2017 Digicel Grand Prix Athletics Series, the Eastern Championships, at the UWI-Usain Bolt Track tomorrow. The head coach of Titchfield High, Julian Ivy, welcomes the Digicel Grand Prix initiative, calling it “a wonderful idea.”Most of the schools in the Eastern region are really strapped for cash,” he said.”The eastern region is looked upon as the least in track and field in Jamaica. However, we’ve produced a lot of top athletes who have gone on to excel at the highest international level; and we’ve to understand that before they got to that stage, these coaches aided their development,” Ivy added. Some of the most notable include Morant Bay High alumnus Juliet Cuthbert, who won sprint double silver at the Barcelona Olympics; and another Morant Bay High star – who later transferred to Kingston College – sprint hurdler Hansle Parchment. Parchment won bronze at the London 2012 Olympics and silver at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China.Competition away from their training grounds this season has been sparse for most schools participating at the Eastern Championships, but St Mary High’s boys and girls have shown all-round strength at some of the development meets. These include The Queen’s Grace Jackson Invitational and Camperdown Classic, with Class Two girls Keresa Richardson, Janaeli Campbell and Kay-ann James looking dominant among the Eastern Championship entrants, along with Class Two boy Lenard Hall.PARTICULARLY STRONGThe latter is particularly strong in the 800m, where his female colleagues also appear quite strong in Classes One and Two, with Tameria Howell (Class Two) and Shanice Panton (Class One) headlining their charge.Among the boys’ sprinters, Morant Bay’s Jaheim Henry and Annotto Bay’s Kenoy Francis have done fairly well and should be among the Class Two front-runners, with St Mary High’s Travis Henry and Nicardo Vincent also expected to shine.Among Class One girls, Morant Bay’s Tishelle Fulcott and Nneka Francis, along with Oberlin High’s Latoya Graham, should feature.Though Buff Bay High have not shown their hand, they have gone toe to toe with St Mary High for the championship in recent years and are expected to feature big time again.”Right now, it’s between Buff Bay and St Mary High,” Ivy predicted. “Morant Bay will be coming strong as well.”We (Titchfield) are not expecting to be in the top three, as we’ve a fairly young team.”Nonetheless, Ivy said his Class One boys, Kai Chang and Moses Parkinson, will place high in the Class One Digicel Grand Prix Championship events, the high jump and discus. The Digicel Grand Prix Championship events are the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump, high jump, discus and 4x400m relays for Classes One and Two boys’ and girls. The series consists of five meets and the top two athletes from each of the Digicel Grand Prix Championship events will advance to the final, the G.C. Foster Classics, which will be held at the National Stadium on March 11.Each athlete can only participate in one individual event at the final, which carries a grand prize of $1 million dollars in gym equipment for the top boys’ and girls’ schools, $500,000 for second, and $250,000 for third.last_img read more

Surf and turf teenager

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest As a 15-year-old Blake Hanko enjoys the best of both worlds growing up here in Ohio — at least for an outdoors-minded teenager. The Erie County 4-H member spends his summers hanging around his family’s Cranberry Creek Marina, located on the shore of Lake Erie just west of Huron, in the heart of some of the best fishing the Great Lakes has to offer. I have boated and fished out of the marina several times in the past couple of seasons and have enjoyed getting to know the folks who operate the popular “mom & pop” boat business — Bob and Susan Hanko — and have come to envy Blake’s lifestyle and demeanor. At Cranberry Creek, when he’s not helping out his mom or sisters in the bait shop or his dad on the boat docks, he’s netting water snakes or casting for smallmouth bass and perch from the beach and breakwalls of the marina — or any manner of adventures a kid can find in such a setting. Hanko even has his own 16-foot outboard-powered boat, which he’s been puttering around in since he was 12 after taking his watercraft operator’s class, and is an accomplished boat handler and angler. When the teenager isn’t “messing about” with the boats and the marina, the balance of Blake’s free time is spent on the family farm, some eight miles inland. In the fall and winter, when he’s not tending to his 10 head of market steers or his hay business, he’s hunting deer or taking target practice to hone his shooting skills. This spring Blake planted a garden, which will keep the lad busy and the family in fresh vegetables this summer, and perhaps offer something additional for him to show at the Erie County Fair.As a kid growing up in suburbia where I had to beg a car ride to the nearest fishable water and discharging a BB gun in my own yard put me on the wrong side of the law, I can only imagine what life would have been like growing with one foot in the country and the other in a boat.As for Blake, he doesn’t appear to take any of it for granted. He has a great work ethic, appreciates what he’s got, and has his head on straight. At least from this parent’s perspective.  Mom and Dad may beg to differ…last_img read more

BurstNET Links Blogetery to Al-Qaeda

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market BurstNET, the host for the blog platform Blogetery, released a statement today. Blogetery’s 70,000 blogs were shut down with little notice last week, as we reported yesterday. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… “BurstNET received a notice of a critical nature from law enforcement officials, and was asked to provide information regarding ownership of the server hosting Blogetry.com. It was revealed that a link to terrorist material, including bomb-making instructions and an al-Qaeda ‘hit list,’ had been posted to the site.”This was interpreted as a terms-of-service violation against Blogetery as a whole, said the company. “BurstNET determined that the posted material, in addition to potentially inciting dangerous activities, specifically violated the BurstNET Acceptable Use Policy. This policy strictly prohibits the posting of ‘terrorist propaganda, racist material, or bomb/weapon instructions.’ Due to this violation and the fact that the site had a history of previous abuse, BurstNET elected to immediately disable the system.”Presumably the “previous abuse” was of copyright violations, which the owner said was dealt with in a timely fashion. The fairness of shutting down the 69,999 blogs that were innocent for the one that may prove guilty, is up for debate. We have questions in to the company and will post any response if we receive one. Thanks to Jeremy for the tip. London Olympics: Devendro’s loss shows his lack of experience against opponents like Barnes

first_imgDevendro Singh’s dreams of winning an Olympic medal came to an agonising end as he lost 18-23 to Ireland’s Paddy Barnes in a bristling light flyweight quarterfinal on Wednesday night. With it, the Indian boxing campaign came to an earlier end than they would have liked. For a boxer who had earned an RSC verdict in the first round against Bayron Molina of Honduras and a 16-11 victory of 2008 finalist Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia, Devendro Singh had the potential to get past the Irishman and get among the medals. But Barnes fought smart by combining aggression and sensible defence to cause India to groan in disappointment. The Excel arena throbbed with life and the huge number of Irish supporters armed with their national flags watched the Indian start in an attacking manner. However, the 25-year-old Barnes drew on his experience of winning the 2008 Olympic bronze as well as the European and the Commonwealth Games titles in 2010 to deny Devendro more scoring opportunities than he got. With a never-say-die approach, the pocket-sized dynamo from Manipur negated the two-point lead that Barnes picked up in the first round but was unable to bridge the gap caused by his conceding far too many in the second round when he was penalised for ‘head-butting’ his opponent. The round scores read 7-5, 10-5 and 6-8 reflected Barnes’ superior footwork, defence and overall ringcraft. You have to put it down to his lack of experience of fighting in blue riband competitions that led Devendro Singh to raise his head in a reflex action when Barnes clinched him after landing a series of scoring blows.advertisementThe American referee David Llaurado was quick to stop the bout and penalise the 20-year-old Indian for head butting. It must be said though that the manner in which Devendro Singh fought back despite trailing 10-17 after two rounds was commendable. It showcased his mental fortitude. It was not as if he was flailing his gloved fists aimlessly but there was a method that he followed. It led to Barnes clinching the Indian and earning the wrath of the referee. The win gave Barnes another shot at China’s Zou Shiming, the defending champion. Barnes lost to the Chinese top-seed in the 2007 World Championship and the 2008 Olympic Games. And the result left Devendro with something to ponder about. With greater experience and maturity, the boxer from Army Sports Institute can emerge as one of India’s top boxers in the coming years.India derived much joy in seven men qualifying for the boxing competition at the Games this time but barring middleweight boxer Vijender Singh and Devendro Singh who were one bout away from winning a medal, none of them was able to make it to the quarterfinals. It was not the best end for national coach GS Sandhu’s career as India’s chief coach.”Devendro was unlucky,” said Brig Muralidharan Raja after the bout. “I am sure the experience he has garnered will hold him in good stead,” added Raja.last_img read more

Business Blog: What Is The Best Time Of Day To Post?

Why You Can’t Fully Outsource SEO

first_img . A big piece of search engine optimization is creating interesting and relevant content for your audience. That often means calling on your expertise for the content of a blog post, for example, even if it means hiring a writer or editor to put it down in sentences and paragraphs. Your Relationships quick fix on SEO 101 Your Content SEO Why Your Business Can’t Fully Outsource SEO: Topics: . Another big piece of search engine optimization is can quickly get you up to speed. All that said, this is not to say that you should not hire an SEO consultant. The key here is that you cannot fully outsource this project – you must be commited to being involved in your SEO initiatives (and should probably be wary of any SEO consultant that says they can do it all without your input). Whether you hire a consultant or decide to take on your SEO yourself, you should probably educate yourself on the basics and understand what you should be tracking and measuring to make sure you’re not wasting your time and money. You (hopefully) know your business better than any SEO consultant you could hire. This means that you know your market and you can make the right judgments on the most relevant keywords to optimize around. When it comes to developing a smart Internet marketing strategy, you should do a full keyword research process to identify which keywords (1) have a high number of monthly searches, (2) are not as competitive or difficult to start ranking for, and (3) are relevant to your business. We talk to a lot of businesses who say they want a company to “do SEO” for them – they’re looking for a company or consultant to whom they can outsource their search engine optimization completely. Many people who are new to the space and don’t yet understand how SEO works – how it is an ongoing process that requires a business’ input – think that it’s simply a checklist of items that they can hand off to an outside consultant. But that is not actually the case. ? How about some – links serve as references for your site and signal to the search engines that you are important. Some linkbuilding you can outsource – getting listed in high quality directories, for example – but another piece of your linkbuilding strategy should include engaging in the blogosphere and developing relationships with bloggers in your industry. Much of building up your business’ reputation online involves building up your personal reputation online by interacting on a individual level with the consumers and peers in your industry – something a consultant cannot really do on your behalf. marketing webinar Your Keywordslast_img read more

5 Google+ Tricks to Dominate Google Search Results

first_img Don’t forget to share this post! AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to Email AppEmail AppShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to MessengerMessengerShare to SlackSlack Technical SEO There are a number of ways using Google+ for marketing can have a beneficial impact on your business’ search engine optimization efforts. Because Google is so eager to provide plenty of incentives for people to actively use the network, it has tied the platform very closely to all of its Google Search features as well. As a result, there are many ways that using Google+ can help boost your regular performance in Google’s organic search results as well as help you generate more traffic from people doing searches on the topics you already rank for.In fact, because of the strong connection between Google+ and Google Search, businesses can’t afford not to create and maintain a Google+ page. Because Google is launching new integrations between Google+ and Google Search on a regular basis, your business’ search presence will only suffer without an active Google+ page. Here are 5 ways you can use Google+ to help you enhance your business’ SEO.Add the +1 Button to Your WebsiteThe first major SEO benefit of Google+ is in regard to +1 usage/shares and their influence on search rankings. Just like other types of social media sharing, the number of +1s a particular page receives is a factor in how well it will rank in search for different phrases. This directly affects search rankings, and the number of +1s a page has received is also displayed on results pages, especially if those votes came from people who are in your Circles on Google+. This is just another way maintaining an active profile on Google+ is directly influential to your success elsewhere, because your actions on Google+ will have influence on the rest of your profile and activity. That is the main takeaway from Google’s efforts: you will directly benefit by adopting and using more of the Google+ platform and integrating it with your website and marketing efforts.Marketing Takeaway: Add the Google +1 button to your website and blog so that people can easily share your blog posts and landing pages with their friends, and help your pages rank better at the same time. You’ll also benefit from increased traffic, as our research shows that websites using the +1 button generate 3.5x the Google+ visits than sites without the button.Get Your Google+ Status Updates to Appear in Search ResultsIn late December, Google began including specific status updates from Google+ in Google Search results, when they were relevant. This works for both personal profiles and brand pages, making it a very useful addition. While profiles could already appear in search results, the update allowed for specific status updates to appear as well. Marketing Takeaway: The key lesson here is to think about which keyword phrases you want your status updates to rank for, and make sure you optimize your status updates with those keywords. If you’re posting about something interesting and insightful (and why wouldn’t you be?), make sure you spend the few moments it takes to be thoughtful about your keyword usage. It will provide more opportunities to get found, and it’s yet another chance for your great content from social media to shine.Leverage the Google+ Author TagOne of the most visible changes to Google’s search results pages with the launch of Google+ has been the addition of author names, images, and information throughout results pages for editorial content. Google executed a clever strike here by creating a feature that bloggers would be excited to implement. It was an unusually creative move by Google, because to leverage the feature, blog authors must include a link in their post back to their Google+ profile in order to establish authorship. This serves as both an inbound link into the author’s Google+ profile page (which is obviously beneficial to Google+’s number and quality of inbound links), and it also ensures that every author who is active and excited about their blog signs up for Google+ and uses the service. Marketing Takeaway: The appearance of profile information is great for helping your content stand out in search results. If you’re competing for a popular keyword, adding this kind of color and different appearance to your search result can really help you stand out in a crowd of results. By improving your click-through rate from that results page, you will have the opportunity to get more visitors to your site without necessarily impacting your rank. As long as you rank highly enough that people will have the chance to see you in the results (say, position 5 or better), this will have a great impact on how many clicks you earn from searchers. To start using Google+’s Author Tag for enhanced listings in search, click here and follow Google’s instructions.Take Advantage of Personalized SearchThe most recent feature addition to Google+ is ‘Search plus Your World,’ a new version of Google that mixes personal results from your Google+ network in with your regular search results. This mode of Google will search your social network for results, even including results that only you can see for privacy reasons. In other words, Google’s search now includes both regular results and very personal updates from social media. You’ll be able to see when you are receiving personal results because they are called out in a special way and always placed at the very top of a search results page. Be aware that what you share on Google+ can have an increased reach because of this update. It makes Google+ a great place for sharing content and having discussions, because now that content is easy to find (as opposed to networks like Facebook and Twitter, which currently lack personalized search).Marketing Takeaway: Because it is connected to the world’s most popular search engine, content shared on Google+ now has the potential for a much longer lifespan than content shared on other networks. Think about your keyword strategy and how to best exercise it on your Google+ page. Results from a searcher’s Google+ network will also rise to the top of Google search results when they use Search plus Your World. And if your company has built up a large following on Google+, content you’ve shared with your followers will also show up in those followers’ relevant Google.com searches, keeping your business top of mind and increasing its visibility among existing followers across multiple channels.Get Your Pages and Profiles Found in Search Results With the ‘Search plus Your World’ update, another powerful influence for brands that comes only with Google+ adoption is placement in the top-right corner of Google search results for people and pages who are closely associated with a particular topic or brand. If your Google+ business page is relevant to a particular keyword search, Google will show your page in the results for those searches. Furthermore, if you tie your Google+ personal profile to your brand’s domains (for example, by putting your work email address into your Google+ profile), Google can serve your profile in response to people who are learning more about your brand.Marketing Takeaway: To make sure your business page shows up for searches on keywords for which you want to rank, maintain a regularly updated Google+ business page and optimize your updates with those keywords. For example, if a searcher searches for ‘marketing software’ on Google.com, HubSpot’s Google+ page might show up in the top-right results box, providing us with more SEO real estate. To make sure that your profile is able to show up in that top-right box for branded searches, make sure that you’ve added your work email address to your Google+ profile and confirmed the address works, and list your occupation and position in your profile. Remember that Google wants to serve the best possible results, so it’ll only show your profile if it thinks it would actually be helpful for a searcher. If you’re not regularly posting about your brand or really using Google+ often, Google is less likely to show you in the result. Encourage your business’ employees to include your business’ information and content in their Google+ profile so your business can get even more exposure in search results. What other benefits have you noticed from using Google+ to enhance your business’ SEO?Image Credit: Widjaya Ivan Originally published Jan 24, 2012 10:32:00 AM, updated February 01 2017 Topics:last_img read more

Analyze Twitter Data for Any Search Term [Free Tool]

first_img Originally published May 1, 2012 9:00:00 AM, updated February 01 2017 Find Industry InfluencersWhen we analyze the report run for the “#B2BChat” (a popular Twitter chat), we can use the most mentioned users section to quickly identify users who are most influential in that community. If you’re interested in engaging that audience, these are likely the great users to reach out to, as they tend to dominate the discussion. On the other hand, looking at the TweetCharts report for “Las Vegas” reveals that the vast majority of users tweeting about Sin City only tweet about it once. This means that there are no easily identifiable common influential users for that topic. One might conclude that most are tourists who are not following the same group of people. Therefore, influencer marketing tactics are unlikely to reach the transient Las Vegas audience on Twitter.Identify Opportunities for Engagement Another possible solution presents itself when we run the report for a search on “vacation.” Here we find that more than 12% of the tweets mentioning the word “vacation” are in fact questions. If you’re trying to reach an audience interested in travel, a useful Twitter tactic would be to search for questions about travel, vacations, and specific destinations and answering them (either with tweets or through content like blog posts and videos). There are only a few examples of some of the things you can learn from TweetCharts reports. I encourage you to run a few reports of your own using the search terms that concern your business or industry. Be sure to let us know what types of data you uncover and what other use-cases you come up with. How else can marketers use this tool? Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working — mostly in secret — on a sweet new free tool. Well, I’m finally ready to release it this week. It’s called TweetCharts, and it’s designed to be a simple way for you to quickly and easily obtain Twitter data on any hashtag, username, word, phrase, or URL. No longer do you have to wait for some social media scientist to run a report for you; now you can do it yourself! To give you a sampling of the different use-cases and information you can pull out of this flexible tool, I ran a few interesting reports and highlighted what I thought was the most useful information from each. Here are a few things I learned…Understand What Tweet Sources Are Telling YouWhen we look at the TweetCharts report for a given search term — let’s say, “analytics” — we find that many of the most popular applications used to post tweets containing the word “analytics” are automated or third-party posting systems including Twitterfeed and Buffer. This indicates that most of the tweets mentioning “analytics” are those created by automated broadcasting and scheduling tools, likely by marketers. Using this data, if you were trying to engage in a real conversation about analytics on Twitter, for instance, you’d probably want to target long-tail keywords such as “measuring marketing” or “marketing metrics,” which are more likely to be used in human, not automated conversations. But when we compare that to the report run for “LadyGaga,” we see a very different set of third-party applications used to tweet. Mobile applications and the Twitter.com web interface dominate, indicating that this audience is a very “normal” bunch and are manually tweeting, rather than scheduling or automating content. Most of these Twitter users are probably not marketers, so heavy-handed social media marketing tactics would probably appear alien here.Determine Which Hashtags Your Audience is UsingLooking at the top hashtags section of the TweetCharts report for a search on “JustinBieber” shows us the conversational threads that are happening amongst Bieber fans. If I were a marketer looking to get in front of that kind of audience, these hashtags would make a great starting point. Sharing interesting content in tweets related to and tagged with these hashtags would likely appear in the search streams of hardcore Bieber fans.Turning to the hashtag section of the report for the search query “SEO,” we find that many include the hashtag “jobs.” This tells us that many of the people using the keyword “SEO” on Twitter are either looking to be hired or are hiring. Those trying to recruit or find employment in the SEO space would do well to target this keyword. SEO and Social Mediacenter_img Topics: Don’t forget to share this post!
