Gov’t Discharges 4 Ebola Survivors

first_imgGovernment yesterday discharged four Ebola patients from the ELWA II Ebola Treatment Unit supported by the French charity, Medicine Sans Frontiers (MSF) amid cheers from onlookers and families of the survivors. Those discharged were among victims of the recent outbreak in Margibi County, which was a result of the death of a 17 year old boy from the virus, health reports said. The survivors were discharged by the authorities of the Ministry of Health. Their ages range from 9 to 24 years. They included 3 males and one female. At the ceremony, Deputy Health Minister, Tolbert Nyenswah, reassured the public that there was no need to panic as the country is now well prepared with the requisite medical capacity to tackle the deadly Ebola virus disease (EVD).According to him, the immediate and effective response of the health team to this latest outbreak of the virus is a clear indication that the country has the capacity to put any outbreak under control and help those victims move on with life after they have recuperated.“When we speak of capacity, I mean we have a good health team that can rapidly provide treatment and save lives as demonstrated by the five persons who were being declared free of the virus,” said Nyenswah. At present, there are no confirmed cases in the country, which Nyenswah believes is a clear indication that the country now has a good capacity to deal with the deadly virus.Meanwhile Minister Nyenswah urged the survivors to continue the preventive measures to ensure that they keep safe since more than 100 other persons are still under observation, a sign that the Ebola fight is not yet over.Dr. Moses Massaquoi of ELWA II, said the survivors were taken to the ETU and were confirmed positive of the virus, but because of the quick intervention by medical teams, they were treated and discharged. The survivors admitted contracting the virus after they ate a stray dog, but medical investigations disproved their version of the contact. They vowed never to eat dog meat any more for the rest of their lives, adding, “From today if we see a dog passing, we will avoid coming in contact with the animal.”Meanwhile, Ebola has killed more than 4,800 people in Liberia before the country was declared Ebola transmission-free on May 9.Samples taken from the 17-year-old boy show the virus is genetically similar to viruses that infected many people in the same area more than six months ago, the World Health Organization has said.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Govt misleads: Basil Blackman still honorary advisor

first_imgBasil Blackman has confirmed he still holds the position of an honorary advisor under the Ministry of the Presidency (MoTP) even though the Government has refuted claims of that nature.Blackman told Guyana Times on Saturday that he has been an advisor since his appointment in May 2016.As honorary advisor, Blackman was not being paid but he was willing to contribute to improved governance.A business card showing Basil Blackman is an official of the MoTPHowever, the MOTP on April 25, in a strong missive, denied that Blackman was an official of that body as was outlined in an online news article.“The Ministry of the Presidency wishes to inform all and sundry that Mr Basil Blackman AA, the individual mentioned in the sensational report, is not an adviser to His Excellency David Granger, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, neither is he an official of the Ministry of the Presidency,” the statement outlined. The MOTP further demanded that the online news entity retract its article, claiming that assertion that Blackman was an official is erroneous. The online article reported that the man fingered in the plot to assassinate President David Granger had attended a party hosted by Blackman. However, Blackman has since highlighted that he does not know all of the attendees at the event.Regarding the investigation into the assassination plot, Police have managed to obtain the phone records of persons involved. The probe recently took an unexpected turn when a witness revealed that the complainant (the man who claimed he was hired to assassinate the President) had offered him money to give a statement to the Police claiming that he was present when the two businessmen contacted him (complainant) to assassinate the President.According to sources, the complainant had only made the monetary offer after he informed the Police of the assassination plot.Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has assured that all efforts are being made to expedite the investigation. If the Police concludes that the assassination plot claims were mischievous, guilty parties can be charged for providing false information to the Police. However, if the allegation is true, the guilty parties could be charged for treason.last_img read more
