Ramon Laureano honored as AL Player of the Week

first_imgHOUSTON — In the hours following the announcement of Ramon Laureano’s American League Player of the Week honor, Laureano took a light snooze in the A’s clubhouse at Minute Maid Park. A major series against Oakland’s toughest division foe was afoot, and no award would interrupt his unorthodox intense zen.“It’s cool,” Laureano said a while later of the award. “I enjoyed it for one minute because Bob told me to, but got to keep moving on. Today’s a new series, very important.”That’s typical …last_img

South African struggle heroes honoured in Mozambique

first_img14 September 2015The Matola Monument and Interpretative Centre was unveiled in Maputo on Friday in a tribute to the anti-apartheid activists killed by security police in a raid on 30 January 1981.The South African Defence Force of the apartheid government raided the African National Congress (ANC) safe houses in Matola, Maputo and killed 13 members of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and one Mozambican national. The Mozambican and South African presidents, Filipe Nyusi and Jacob Zuma, both attended the inauguration of the centre. The monument is an effort to redress the historical imbalances in heritage sites, as well as aid social cohesion and nation building.“The unveiling of the memorial will enable South Africa to pay homage to the fallen soldiers and also acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions made by the Mozambicans towards a free, non-racial and democratic South Africa,” the Presidency said.Three red pillars in the centre of the monument are inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives in the raid. The multimedia information centre contains photographs and documents chronicling the anti-apartheid journey, and the joint effort of Mozambique and South African freedom fighters to end apartheid.Nyusi said that through the raid, “the apartheid regime once again showed its true cruel and inhuman face”. He described the attack as “a clear affront against our territorial integrity and sovereignty, our peace and all forms of human rights”.Zuma added: “The opening of this monument stands as a witness of freedom and it also stands as a testament to the resilience of our people. This monument is our testimony to the world that we have conquered in trying times.”Ties that bindThe monument was also a symbol of the strong bonds of friendship between South Africa and Mozambique, Zuma said. “We must together grapple with the strategic questions facing our peoples, such as unemployment, inequality and poverty. We must work together as we face these challenges.”Earlier in the day, the two presidents laid wreaths in Llhanguene Cemetery, at the graves of the victims of the raid. They also unveiled a large collective gravestone for the South African freedom fighters who died at Matola.Source: SAnews.govlast_img read more

Hemlock pest discovered in Scioto County

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) today announced the discovery of a hemlock-killing pest in Scioto County in southern Ohio. The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is a small, aphid-like insect native to Asia that threatens the health and sustainability of eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock in the eastern United States.HWA was first reported in the eastern United States in 1951 in Virginia. Today, it is established in portions of 20 states from Maine to Georgia, where infestations cover about half of the range of eastern hemlock. Areas of the southern Appalachian region and New England have experienced significant mortality of eastern hemlock due to this devastating insect. The infestation was detected by ODNR officials at Shawnee State Forest and Shawnee State Park in Scioto County. Officials have been conducting surveys in and around the infested area to determine the extent of the infestation. HWA is primarily transported by wind and birds. Officials believe the recent findings in Ohio are the result of natural spread from nearby areas where the pest is established. HWA was originally detected in Ohio in Meigs County in 2012.At this time, ODA will move to expand its hemlock quarantine, enforced by ODA’s Plant Health division, to include Scioto County. Ohio quarantine regulations restrict the movement of hemlock materials from counties known to be infested into non-infested Ohio counties. Ohio’s quarantine law also requires hemlock materials grown in non-infested counties in quarantined states to be inspected before being shipped and have a phytosanitary certificate verifying that the plant material is free of HWA when entering Ohio. For more information about the HWA in Ohio, visit agri.ohio.gov/divs/plant/hwa/hwa.aspx.last_img read more

All You Have Is Time

first_img“I don’t have time.”You’ve said those words. So have I. You think that you don’t have enough time quite often too, don’t you? But the one thing you do have is time. And you have enough time, too. You may be missing something else. What you may be lacking is enough time to do all the things to which you have committed yourself and your time. You may have said “yes” to too many small things that are now crowding out what’s really important. We always find time for what believe is most important—even when most of the time what we perceive to be important now isn’t important long-term. Enough time is a question of your values and your priorities. You may also not enough courage to say “no” when people make requests of you. It’s tough to tell people “no,” especially when you have the ability to help them. It takes a certain level of confidence and comfort in one’s own skin to say “no.” Lacking this courage is one reason you may feel you don’t have enough time.A lack of energy can make you feel as if you have a lack of time. You might feel that you can’t get up and exercise or write or read or pray because you don’t have the energy. You might feel as if you need the sleep. But getting up and doing any of these things can change your life and positive ways that are hard to imagine. And more than a few of them will multiply your energy. You have enough time now to do all kinds of things. Looking at a short time, you can feel the stress of not having enough of it. To straighten out your perception of not having enough time, you have to look at longer periods. You aren’t going to have enough time to do all of the things you want to do, contribute all you want to contribute, and spend time with the ones you love. At some point in the future, you are going to wish you had more time.To avoid wishing for more time later, you need to make better decisions about what you do with your time now. Kansas State Is a Three-Point Favorite Over OSU, And Here Is Why

first_imgWhile you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. It’s a big ask from us to you, but it also comes with a load of benefits like ad-free browsing (ads stink!), access to our premium room in The Chamber and monthly giveaways. The other thing it does is help stabilize our business into the future. As it turns out, sending folks on the road to cover games and provide 24/7 Pokes coverage like the excellent article you just read costs money. Because of our subscribers, we’ve been able to improve our work and provide the best OSU news and community anywhere online. Help us keep that up. There was a ripple of surprise on Sunday as Kansas State opened up as a three-point (or 2.5-point) favorite over Oklahoma State depending on where you get your gambling information. KSU was coming off a narrow 31-26 win over Iowa State (!) and OSU had just trounced West Virginia. But Vegas is smart, and Vegas knows that this OSU team wins games by creating turnovers. Vegas also knows that Kansas State is easily the best team in the Big 12 at protecting the football and currently No. 8 in the country at 0.9 turnovers per game. That doesn’t bode well for the Cowboys. There are other reasons Kansas State is favored, too. Most notably that the game is in Manhattan and the home team is 10-2 in this series since 1998 including the last five contests. OSU has only won one time in Manhattan since 1988 (that was in 2014). It is 1-8 in that span. Yikes! There’s more though. Advanced stats show that Kansas State, despite its 5-3 record, is actually better than Oklahoma State on defense.Big 12 defenses (S&P+)19) BU35) WVU47) TCU53) KSU61) OU66) OSU82) UT97) KU107) ISU118) TT— Oklahoma State Stats (@OSUStats) October 30, 2016So don’t just look at the most recent game when evaluating this line. Just because OSU is ranked and KSU is not does not mean it will be an upset if the Wildcats win on Saturday. Just like it should not have been considered an upset for OSU to beat West Virginia last Saturday. This is going to be a massively difficult game for OSU on Saturday in Manhattan. Vegas knows it. We know it. Mike Gundy knows it. Everybody knows it. Win this one, though, and you shorten that path to Norman for a de facto Big 12 title game.Whooo boy, I love November.last_img read more
