Set 220 to win, India’s batsmen failed to put up any kind of fight against some disciplined bowling from the Black Caps on a flat pitch.New Zealand were asked to bat by Rohit Sharma and the Kiwis were all too thrilled to go first on a batting-friendly surface. Tim Seifert, playing only his 9th T20I and the dangerous Colin Munro added 86 for the first wicket. Krunal Pandya snared Munro for a 20-ball 34 in the ninth over but by then the damage had already been done. This was India’s heaviest defeat in T20Is in terms of runs. In 2010, India had lost to Australia by 49 runs in Bridgetown. In the 2016 World T20, India were subjected to a 46-run defeat against New Zealand. Again in 2017, New Zealand walloped India by 40 runs in Rajkot. Go 1-0 up in the three match T20I series.#NZvIND BCCI (@BCCI) February 6, 2019Tim Seifert was well set and skipper Kane Williamson came out all guns blazing to smash a quick 34. New Zealand lost Seifert, who made 84 off 43 but they were well on course for a huge total. Khaleel Ahmed helped India avoid further carnage when he bowled a near yorker to send Seifert packing 16 short of a well-deserved hundred in the 13th over.advertisementBut Williamson and Ross Taylor (23 off 14) ensured New Zealand got to 219 for 6. Scott Kuggeleijn walked in at No 8 and smashed three fours and a six to finish with 20 not out off 7 balls to give the Black Caps impetus towards the end of the innings.India’s chase got off to a promising start when Shikhar Dhawan hammered Kuggeleijn for two sixes and a four in his first over. But Tim Southee dismissed Rohit Sharma with a well-directed short ball for 1. Vijay Shankar was sent up the order at No 3 and he did look like an able ally for Dhawan but disaster strick when Dhawan fell to Lockie Ferguson in the sixth over for 29.Rishabh Pant, who returned to the Indian team after being left out of the ODI series agaisnt Australia and New Zealand, failed to make use of a great opportunity. He fell to Mitchell Santner who yorked the Delhi southpaw for 4 off 10 balls. In a further blow to India’s chances, Santner struck again to remove Vijay Shankar for an 18-ball 27.Ish Sodhi, the leg-spinner, struck twice in the space of four balls to remove Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya. MS Dhoni watched helplessly from the other end but the task had become too stiff even for one of the game’s greatest finishers.India were batting deep on Wednesday. Krunal Pandya walked in at No 8 but the top order’s failure meant the required rate had shot up beyond manageable proportions. In the end, it was all about some batting for some kind of respectability for India but they will have to do much better with both bat and ball in the second T20I in Auckland on February 8.Also Read | Dream come true for Pandya brothers as they play together for India for first timeAlso Read | Dinesh Karthik makes up for dropped catch with stunnerFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for Sports news, scores and updates.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
