Address highlights Pico Rivera’s progress, plans

first_imgPICO RIVERA – In his first State of the City address Thursday evening, new City Manager Chuck Fuentes said the city has come a long way but as it approaches its 50th birthday there is still much to improve upon. Fuentes spoke to about 150 members of the business community, teachers, seniors and representatives of youth and Neighborhood Watch groups gathered at the Pico Park Community Center for his address titled A New Agenda for Progress. “I am honored for the opportunity to be part of shaping the city’s future and tonight we will focus on that future while heeding the lessons learned from the past,” he said. Most important and what he described as the best project in the new agenda is a sweeping proposal for a new public library and park expansion in the heart of the city. With the help of Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina and support of the City Council, the city is well on its way to building a new 24,000-square-foot library with multiple computer stations, homework study centers, child care center, community meeting rooms and more, he said. Part of the project includes expanding Smith Park to include the current library site and provide new fields for baseball and soccer. Molina has already committed $8 million to the project and is working to obtain more funds for the library that would cost about $18 million, he added. He also also touched on the status of the long-awaited Passons Boulevard Grade Separation Project. At this time, 75 percent of the funding for the project is in place. To get more funding he hasassigned Michelle Ramirez, an experienced senior manager, to securing grant money, he said. In all it will take $43 million to construct the underpass, he said. Fuentes also took time to address the gang crime and graffiti that plague the city. “Next month I will present to the City Council a plan to enhance our sheriff’s contract to provide specific gang suppression, graffiti abatement and park patrol,” he said. “Working closely with our new Captain Mike Rothans, we expect that all these new programs will add a significant arsenal to our war against crimes. “And it’s a war that we fully intend to win.” [email protected] (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3028 AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORECasino Insider: Here’s a look at San Manuel’s new high limit rooms, Asian restaurant160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
