Channel 44 News: Income Tax Hike, Budget Approved in Four-Hour Long City Council Meeting

first_imgIt was a busy and long day at Evansville City Council. There were two hot-button items on the agenda: a county-wide income tax hike and the 2018 city budget. The purpose behind the income tax hike is to use the money collected for public safety. Currently, people in Vanderburgh County pay about a one percent income tax. The tax hike increases the rate to 1.20 percent.“I just don’t feel like putting a tax on the back of the tax payers is something they don’t really get a benefit of,” said Hayden. “I mean we agree public safety needs more stuff, but I think the we’ve shown them in years prior that we’ve gotten them things in other ways.”With the money collected from the tax helping fund the jail, police and firemen salaries, emergency services, and 911 are just a few of the things it could go toward. It would ultimately be up to city council to decide where the money goes.“I have a question, it’s rhetorical anybody can answer it,” said Larry Zuber, Fire Union president. “Does anybody want to drive around with their kids in a thirty year old vehicle? I think not, yet it’s okay until last month to run 15 firefighters in a vehicle that was 26-years-old.”The tax hike narrowly passed city council with a 5 to 4 vote. Council members Missy Mosby, Jonathan Weaver, Dan McGinn, Dan Adams, and Michelle Mercer voting in favor of the tax hike. Council members Connie Robinson, Justin Elpers, John Hayden and Jim Brinkmeyer voting against it.Evansville City Council then moved on to discuss the proposed $370 million dollar budget for 2018.Discussions between council members began with 13 amendments to the budget. Finance Committee Chairman McGinn did this in hopes all council members could get on the same page and later pass the budget.Council was originally going to take away METS U.S 41 bus route ($120,000) in an amendment but after public comment, they voted to withdraw the amendment. There was also an amendment to eliminate $105,000 worth of funding to 16 non-profits, who have been hit hard by budget cuts in years past.“When we succeed, we all succeed. When we grow, we all grow,” said one man during public comment. “So thus, these non-profits are essential in growing this community. So I would ask you to reconsider that as we grow together, let this be a collaborative effort, not one by which we say that we’re just going to let the non-profits fend for themselves.”That amendment was voted down by council, which means those organizations will receive funding for at least one more budget year. After going through all 13 amendments council voted on the budget. Council cut about $1.5 million dollars from the budget. With an 8-1 vote the 2018 Evansville Budget was passed by council.FacebookTwitterCopy LinkEmailSharelast_img read more

Chiefs hold Man United to a draw

first_img21 July 2008Manchester United had to be satisfied with a come-from-behind 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs in the opening match of the Vodacom Challenge in front of a capacity crowd at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday. It was a pre-season outing for both clubs and Chiefs will, no doubt, be more satisfied with the outcome than the English Premier League and European Champions League title-holders.The Amakhosi, rather than being overawed by their illustrious opposition, clearly saw the match as an opportunity to make a name for themselves, rather than a game from which they hoped to emerge with a draw. Yes, it did end in a draw, but it was not a defensive effort from Chiefs, who took the game to the Red Devils.First shotThe South African team was the first to have a crack at goal through David Mathebula, but his shot from distance was safely dealt with by United goalkeeper Tomasz Kusczak.Siphiwe Tshabalala had a half-chance only a minute later, but his slight hesitation before shooting gave United’s defenders time to block his shot.Wayne Rooney, whose hair-trigger temperament was unfortunately on display, had an opportunity after 10 minutes with a free kick, but his show flew harmlessly over the crossbar.Chris Eagles had a shot blocked by defender Tinashe Nengomashe before Tevez came close with the head. Captain Gary Neville then picked out the Argentine striker on the near post, but his header passed narrowly wide of the goals.PenaltyWith 37 minutes played, Chiefs were awarded a penalty when Neville fouled Siphiwe Tshabalala as he burst onto the ball and into the area at an angle. Jonathan Quartey took the spot kick and easily beat Kusczak by sending him the wrong way.The Amakhosi took that 1-0 lead into the break.Tevez was again wide with a header after six minutes of the second half and two minutes later the Red Devils very nearly had the game taken out of their reach.A half-cleared ball inside United’s fell to new Chiefs’ striker Jose Torrealba, but he rushed his shot and failed to connect properly. The ball hit Wes Brown and passed off of the defender to Kusczak’s right and wide of the post.EqualiserThe English champions finally drew level on the hour mark. A deep cross by Tevez found Chris Eagles at the back post and his powerful header skipped off the back of Jimmy Tau’s head and into the back of the net.Rooney was replaced when he picked up a yellow card for a late challenge on Nengomashe. Earlier in the match he had lashed out at Onismor Bashera, but the referee had missed the incident. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had seen enough, however, and replaced the star striker.Despite falling behind, Chiefs were not about to try and play out for a draw and Gert Schalkwyk was just off target after Bhasera found him with a good cross.Ultimately, however, both teams had to be satisfied with a draw.Praise for KhuneAfter the match, Ferguson said Chiefs had performed well and he singled out Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune for praise, saying he was especially impressed by the 21-year-old’s distribution, which often put his team onto the counter-attack.Kaizer Chiefs’ coach Muhsin Ertugral said he was pleased with the commitment shown by his players, but said he is still working on combinations. He said the performance augers well for the new season. Last season, Chiefs finished a sixth in the PSL.The side’s new captain Jimmy Tau felt his team had learnt a lot and said he was proud of the way they played.Would you like to use this article in your publicationor on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Natural gas and energy prices expected to stay low

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest It is likely that prices of natural gas — now at their lowest in two decades — will be even lower during the home heating season next winter, Purdue University energy economist Wally Tyner says.In another good sign for low energy costs for consumers, Tyner also expects gasoline prices to stay in the range of $2 to $2.50 a gallon for much of 2016.Consumers already are seeing lower heating bills this winter even before the recent price drop. Tyner said that while the price of natural gas in December is the lowest it has been since 1994, consumers won’t see the full benefit of that in their gas bills this winter. That is because most of the natural gas that will be delivered this winter has already been contracted.“However, it likely means that home heating costs will fall more next winter,” he said.Tyner lists several “supply-and-demand drivers” that are keeping the price of natural gas so low:• Natural gas is produced from both conventional and shale oil and gas formations, so the “fracking” boom has led to large supply increases of natural gas.• The large supply increase has been faster than the rate of demand increase, so price has come down. Also, there is little international trade in natural gas, so the export market is quite limited.• While the low price has discouraged additional drilling for natural gas, oil and gas drilling efficiency has increased tremendously the past 2 to 3 years.• Normally, natural gas is put in storage in summer months, and the stored gas is used over the winter months. This year, however, so far the winter has been abnormally warm. Natural gas storage facilities are approaching full capacity, and limited additional storage is putting tremendous downward pressure on prices.Tyner noted that natural gas is used not only by many consumers for home heating but also by industry for process heat and to generate electricity.“Changes in natural gas prices, therefore, ripple widely through the economy,” he said. For gasoline, Tyner explained that price prospects depend mainly on what happens to the price of crude oil. Crude oil briefly was about $32 per barrel in December 2008 and January 2009. Today, it is about $35. He said forecasts for crude prices for 2016 range from falling to about $20 to increasing to $60 or more.“My sense is that we are near the bottom for crude oil and that it will remain relatively low for much of 2016,” he said.last_img read more

Android or iOS? How to Choose on a Limited Marketing Budget

first_imgRelated Posts The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Tags:#Android Apps#Android Vs iOS#apps#iOS apps#mobile gaming#mobile optimization What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … The technology business industry is mostly about making businesses from all sectors technologically sound. But part of the responsibility is also to help them stabilize with a sustainable online presence.Competition in the mobile app world.Serious competition is one of the most talked about aspect of any business. Mobile apps are no different. In this scenario, there are two major players of mobile app stores based on the mobile OS, Android, and iOS. Both of them have severe internal competition and USPs of their own. They have been business driven and customer-centric simultaneously while becoming fertile platforms for companies to showcase mobile business apps. When we talk about mobile apps, the competition in marketing involved after the launch is a point of considerable attention. Most of the sensible businesses indulge in dedicated activities for mobile App Store optimization and full marketing of the app. In such a scenario, it becomes imperative to look at how the two major players of mobile apps are poised at present. Which one should be chosen if you have a limited marketing budget?Have you ever wondered what an app costs the development company to host that app on the Apple store?FYI, all major mobile app stores charge mobile app hosting fee as per different pricing models. iOS and Android or no different. Apple charges $99 a year from mobile app developers and $299 a year from every iPhone app Development Company for hosting an app over the app store. Kindly note that it is an annual subscription which has to be renewed from time to time. Otherwise, the hosted app is brought down from the respective App Store. In Android, the pricing model is a lifetime subscription. Google charges a one-time fee of $25 for letting you host android mobile applications on Google play store from every Android app development company.Factors determining the marketing cost for an app.Hosting CostAs mentioned above, it is much more expensive to host an iOS mobile app compared to an android app. Although, hosting cost is not one of the most significant factors in determining the overall choice, but marketing cost should undoubtedly be considered under all circumstances. It makes more sense to count on the hosting cost if the mobile app idea is expected to be short-lived and later on you can afford to remove the app. However, it is important to note that Google has also been consistently increasing their hosting cost. The mentioned $25 is the effective price after a 27% increase in the last two years.Market share within the mobile app user base.Android is presently having approximately double the market share of iOS mobile apps. The year 2017-18 showed that there are about 2.6 million Android apps on Google play store and a little less, two million apps on the Apple App Store. This number is well supported by the fact that Android has been the global leader in smartphone market share. 2018 witnessed 217.2 million iOS smartphones being sold while over 1.3 billion Android smartphone units were it in sales of the previous year. The Android mobile platform is more extensive and diversified. There are many important aspects to keep in mind while choosing your mobile app platform within a limited budget. One of the most critical elements worth mentioning separately — is the fundamental analysis that Android is a mobile app platform. This platform is for the general masses and has a much larger and diversified user base. But Android is also a niche market. To reach a more significant number of mobile app customers, Android can be your preferred choice. At the same time, iOS is sticking to a niche market. They are the leaders of the mobile market in the U.S., and it is preferred by most corporates, C-levels, and executives over Android. How does each of these platforms affect the marketing budget?Finding where you stand on the point-on-point decision pitch. If you choose iOS over Android, you will be destined to face a highly informed, intellectual and comparatively more aware base of users. It will automatically lead to a need for much more effective, penetrating and highly convincing marketing pitch to magnetize the mobile app.Android users belong to the trends of the large volume download. In the Android market, you have to focus on capitalizing on the comparatively larger user base — while reaching out to potential customers. Both the choices have their share in the marketing budget, and it can vary as per the choice and stance of the marketing strategy.Different types of mindsets and needs of an individual customer base. Both the mobile app stores customers have entirely different mindsets and an overall stance over the mobile application installation and use. Every iPhone app development company has to come up with highly effective problem-solving abilities and the direct effect of using the app. While Android app development company can help you with exceptional qualities of an app and some significant benefits of using it. The next layer of marketing makes you spend more while marketing your app in the iOS space. It involves next level content creation, user follow-up and marketing pitch effectiveness. The cost of atomic operations involved in mobile app marketing.Cost per install or CPIThe atomic cost for operations which Google play store or the App Store charges from every single install that is taking place. Kindly note that these charges have nothing to do with the publicity or advertising cost — and are only levied if the user presses the install button. Clicking the install button means a fee for each successfully installed app even for a one single time usage. If an app user temporarily deletes the mobile app and later on decide to reinstall it — the earlier paid cost per install still stands countable.Mobile App Store optimization costs — what does this mean?Numerous speculations about hosting mobile apps on Google play store will help you in an online presence — because of the Google SEO benefits. App Store Optimization is wholly based on the relevance of the search made by the user and the most significant factor determining the results is the iOS on which the search is being done through Google. So — what does this mean for my famous top app?It simply means that regardless of how famous or top charted your app is — the relevance will be judged according to the context-sensitive searching algorithm — and the results will be coherent with the search results related to the particular iOS.How does the search results matter?Suppose you search same keyword string across Google on an Android device and an iOS device separately. Google is intelligent enough to show up results relevant to your specific iOS-based apps. Research made through the Android device will show up in Android apps — and iOS device will show up in apps from the App Store.App Store Optimization (ASO) costs.Google play store has numerous parameters and content blocks which are required while releasing your app on the Google play store. This will need a comprehensive marketing plan backed by a convincing launch of the product. On the other hand — iOS requires minimal effort and have a relatively less number of opportunities to optimize the mobile app ranking. The ranking is generally done by the App Store charts — based on the leads and responses received from the majority of users.Monetization opportunities. It is quite apparent that the possible revenue streams which can be created out of a mobile app — can help you ease into the monetization opportunities with the overall numbers of a mobile app marketing plan.Android gives you ample opportunities and broad scope to monetize your mobile app content and user-ship. There are different types of advertisements, referrals and numerous chances of affiliate marketing which make android apps front-runners of any monetization campaign. iOS applications are filtered by Apple’s high security and standard performance protocol which eliminates all sorts of news, ads, and elements that can contribute to deteriorating the UX — and compromise privacy, user data. A limited budget may motivate you to go for android apps as they leave you with a more relaxed space to elaborate on the marketing budget.Your choices in a nutshell. The choice of mobile app platform should be primarily driven by the size and type of your probable customer user base. The principal heads of your mobile app marketing budget are governed by their respective choice only. While other factors do add up in the overall cost — they will have a relatively smaller quantum of effect on the overall numbers and the results achieved after the execution of the marketing plan.Due to increasing competition, every leading Android app development company helps companies choose the most appropriate platform during consultation and requirement fixation. The industry is occupied with genuinely good analysts who help you design mobile products most effectively. You can get complete digital resource information which is easy and practical to market. Entrant technologies and new tools for mobile app development are paving the way for a more sophisticated approach for choosing the right platform. The future of all apps will be intriguing to watch. Their success or failures may depend on the time it takes to get to market. It will be compelling as this future of apps unfurls toward a much better tomorrow of technology. Small Decisions, Repeatedly Taken

first_imgNo one decides to become a liar. It isn’t their goal. Instead, they tell a small lie, followed by another little lie. Eventually, as they become accustomed to avoiding the truth, their lies grow. They tell bigger and more damaging lies, until some point this behavior defines them. There isn’t any person who decides it is their life’s goal to be a drug addict or an alcoholic. To mask some pain, especially the pain of not feeling a sense of belonging, they start abusing some substance. Later, things shift, and instead of them taking some substance, the substance takes them.People don’t make a conscious decision to be lazy. Mostly, they seek comfort or escape. Over time, as comfort wins out over effort, and the comfort-seeker is marked by their laziness, their sloth, and their endless procrastination.Stepping Foot on the PathOnce you step foot on the path, you have chosen a direction. The further you traverse down that path, the more the road is taking you away from what you might have been. Even when you are not conscious of how you are changing (and being changed), and even if no one yet notices, you are becoming something different from what you once were. It’s the seemingly small decisions, repeatedly taken that propel you in a particular direction as much or more than the colossal choices that require more conscious thought. The first small decision is what sets you on a path, but it’s the continuation over time that changes your identity.Turn AroundThis same pattern of small decisions, repeatedly taken, can take you down another path, a better path to becoming something other than what has taken you. The first decision you have to make is to turn around and take the first step. If, in the past, you would have undertaken some action, turning around means taking the opposite action. Being conscious of the new decision and repeatedly taking it moves you out of the wilderness and back towards a better place. For some, the path out is longer and more difficult. For others, once they make a decision, the transformation is almost immediate and irrevocable. Either way, the new path begins with turning around. Essential Reading! 6 Reasons Every Small Business Should Be Blogging… Are You Missing the Boat?

first_imgI am amazed at the blog-reluctance of many small businesses. I hear things like “I don’t have time to blog”, “blogging doesn’t make sense in my industry”, and sometimes even the dreaded “what the heck is a blog?”The reality is if your company provides unique products or services, you should be blogging. (And if your company doesn’t, you should probably consider a career change.)Of course, the overall return on investment on a blog will vary from business to business. But there are 6 fundamental benefits to corporate blogging that should not be overlooked:1) Gain Visibility as a Thought Leader Each thoughtful post on your blog is a public demonstration of your thought leadership, personal integrity, humor, and professional insights. You don’t have to refute one of Einstein’s theories to get respect. For example, a summary of recent trends in your industry, or a reaction to a recent news article can be extremely effective blog posts.2) Engage Customers in a Dialogue If you blog using a solid blogging engine, readers will have the option to comment on each article. Folks who comment on your blog may be sales leads, or they may just challenge or support your views. Either way, comments beget comments, and you will soon be at the center of an industry-relevant dialogue with customers and partners.3) Every Blog Article is an SEO Opportunity The much-discussed “long tail” of search refers to highly specialized, low-traffic search terms that represent a significant amount of total searches. Translation: lots and lots of people are searching online for lots and lots of random things. You can’t realistically optimize your site for every long tail search term, but you can certainly write blog posts targeting niche keyword phrases that are likely to draw highly qualified prospects. For example, blog a reaction to a speaker in your vertical at a local tech conference. You may not draw much natural search traffic, but there is a good chance your blog will rank well very soon for searches like “vertical + conference + speaker + city”, and those visitors may be highly interested in your reaction to the speech.4) Blogs Are Link Bait Very few websites or bloggers will link to the “products and services” page on a corporate website. People don’t link to corporate advertisements. On the other hand, a good blog article is an industry-specific insight or a thoughtful critique. Blog articles garner links because they are interesting, informative, and not overly corporate or sales-focused. The benefit to you is that more links means better search engine rankings and more site traffic, which translates into more sales leads.5) Humanize Your Brand Blogs offer an opportunity for a company to present its insightful, helpful, thoughtful side. Through a blog, prospects will get a sense of your company’s people, culture, and vision. Blogs are an opportunity to provide a less antiseptic view of your company that is more personal and less “corporate”. Blogs can humanize your brand.6) In Google, Fresher Content = Better Website Google will periodically crawl websites looking for new and updated content. In general, it is better to have Google crawl your site as often as possible. Sites that get crawled more often have more frequent updates and more authority. Blogging consistently ensures there will be fresh content on your site.Despite these reasons why companies should be blogging, the same 2 objections surface time and time again:1) I Don’t Have Time to Blog The truth is you don’t have time *not* to blog.  You probably already write blog articles, you just don’t call them that. Blogs are the new email newsletters. Most anything that could go in your newsletter can go in your blog. You can still send the content out via email, and readers can subscribe to your blog to get posts via email. Portions of white papers can also make excellent blog articles. But a blog is better than a newsletter or a white paper because readers can join the debate and be positioned to respond to other “calls to action” you may place adjacent to or within posts. In addition, readers will be able to navigate your blog to read older articles that would otherwise be in a deleted newsletter or white paper. Best of all, each blog article you post will provide lasting benefit because it is a web page that can be optimized, indexed, and drawing natural search traffic for you ad infinitum. In addition, quality blogging engines can support multiple authors, so more than one leader in your organization can post articles. This takes the pressure off any one individual.  And remember that a good blog post might just draw a parallel between two or three recent articles, or suggest an explanation for a puzzling industry phenomenon. A good article doesn’t have to be a PhD thesis.2) What if My Customers Actually Find Out What I’m Thinking?  Some professionals don’t like the idea of blogging because it means relinquishing control over some elements of the corporate brand. A blog is less formal than a press release or an official marketing message, and the comments left by readers cannot be predicted. The point here is… too bad! In today’s world, consumers have access to thousands of opinions about your brand, and thousands of articles, commentaries, product reviews, etc. that will certainly impact the buying decision. The idea that you can control exactly how your brand will be perceived or keep consumers in the dark is outdated. The truth is your best option is to engage customers in an honest, open dialogue. Be confident that transparency is the best policy, and customers will reward your candor. In closing, get out there and blog! Don’t forget to share this post! Be a Publisher — But Don’t Use the Publishing Industry’s Metrics

first_img But page views are not as useful for business blogs. Business blogs are monetized by readers who convert to leads and sales, so these are far better metrics to track.  Visitors So what measurements should you use to analyze the performance of your blog or website? Why inbound links, comments, visitors, leads and customers, of course! In addition to inappropriate use of page views, many business bloggers use metrics that lack specificity. “Hits” is at the top of this list. Unless you’re playing baseball, a “hit” has no specific meaning. It is a vague term that could refer to visitors, pageviews or clicks. If you are limiting your success measurements to hits, you are not at all thinking about your conversion or customer aquisition.  It is wonderful that new marketers have converted to inbound marketing by becoming publishers; however, many still need to transition away from measuring their success in the metrics of the media industry, page views. Media companies rely on page views because they’re easy to count, and because page views are the metric of monetization — advertisers like to buy blocks of them. can convert into leads. Anonymous visits cannot.  It is also a mistake to use “visits” as a primary success metric. Reporting on number of visits can be very misleading. For example, a single person could have visited your website 300 times. You may have 600 visits from only two people. Instead, focus on visitors.center_img Don’t forget to share this post!
