They also were in need of disposable razors, backpacks and gallon-sized plastic storage bags. There was a total of 106 hygiene-kit bags made for women and 109 bags made for men during the five-hour event.“Within our community here at TCU, we are just an incredibly compassionate and giving, caring community,” said Vanessa Roberts Bryan, assistant dean of Student Development Services.Even though TCU wasn’t directly affected by the hurricane, there are almost 900 students who are from the affected areas.“To be an ethical leader and a responsible citizen, you have to work together as a team or as a community to kind of spearhead efforts and then to create positive change in the world,” Roberts Bryan said.Volunteers wrote positive notes that were put in the bags as a reminder that TCU cares. At the end of the packing event, the volunteers loaded up a truck full of the donations. The donations were sent to Tarrant Area Food Bank, because the Goodwill warehouse was full. The items are being sorted and will be sent off to local evacuee shelters.Non-perishable food items and cases of water can also be donated to Tarrant Area Food Bank.To stay informed on more volunteer opportunities regarding Hurricane Harvey, visit relief.tcu.edu. Uber Claims Credit for Drop in Drunk Driving Accidents. But Where’s the Evidence?

first_img“We believe there is a direct relationship between the presence of uberX (Uber’s lowest-cost option) in a city and the amount of drunk driving crashes involving younger populations,” the report says. That could be. But we don’t really know, and neither does Uber. Uber does not provide evidence in its report that Uber users and those under 30 are the same population. A methodology shared with us by Uber asserts that their users are generally younger and more technologically savvy. MADD’s George said they sent the data analysis to an outside research group for extra vetting. She declined to name the group because they were not formally part of the report.Michael Amodeo, an Uber spokesperson, sent us a statement in response to questions about the analysis:“We believe the results of the study are an encouraging step in the right direction and provide evidence that ridesharing services like Uber are making a meaningful and positive impact on mindsets and the rate of drunk driving. We attempt to deal with other factors in our study by breaking out the under 30 and over 30 groups, and we’re comparing them against each other.”Uber’s report credits an analysis by Nate Good, who is chief technology officer for an online ticketing company as well as an amateur statistician and self-described ridesharing proponent. Uber’s report reads: “Inspired by Nate Good’s analysis—which demonstrated a clear downward trend in alcohol-related crashes in Pennsylvania’s youngest cohort once ridesharing was available—we decided to replicate that study in California at large using data procured from the State.”However, Good’s study had nothing to do with “alcohol-related crashes.” Good analyzed DUI arrests. “That was a poor choice of words on Uber’s part,” Good told us.Good was careful to note various caveats of his analysis. No 1 on his list: “Correlation does not equate to causation.” No. 2: “I am a computer science professional and a data science enthusiast, but by no means a statistician.”Good said he attempted to analyze alcohol-involved crash data but could not find a reliable data source. We’ve also reached out to Plouffe, but haven’t heard back yet.ProPublica is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative newsroom. Sign up for their newsletter. Last week Uber revealed another way the ridesharing service is revolutionizing travel: Cities that use Uber see a reduction in drunk driving accidents among young people, a company report showed.“When empowered with more transportation options like Uber, people are making better choices that save lives,” the company declared.David Plouffe—President Obama’s former campaign manager who is now filling the same role for Uber—emailed millions of users to share the astounding news. “Since we launched uberX in California, drunk-driving crashes decreased by 60 per month for drivers under 30,” Plouffe wrote. “That’s 1,800 crashes likely prevented over the past 2 ½ years.”What is Uber’s evidence that they “likely prevented” so many crashes? Not much.Indeed, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which co-authored the report, cautioned us against connecting the rise of Uber to a drop in drunk driving. “Nobody is saying that there is a causation relationship here, this is a correlation relationship. Purely correlational,” said Amy George, senior vice president of marketing and communications for MADD. (MADD took a less cautious stance in a  press release last week: New Report from MADD, Uber Reveals Ridesharing Services Important Innovation to Reduce Drunk Driving.)Uber’s report has two key graphics: The first shows alcohol-involved crashes in California markets where Uber operates. The second shows the same, but in cities where there is no Uber service. Each graph compares accidents between under-30 and 30-and-over drivers. The charts actually show, in general, a downward trend of drunk driving accidents in both Uber and non-Uber markets. But Uber and Plouffe are hanging their assertion on another facet of the analysis: drunk driving crashes for those under 30 have dropped more in cities that have Uber versus those that don’t.center_img Sign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York last_img read more

Israel establishes full ties with Bahrain, UAE at White House

first_imgNetanyahu said the day heralded “a new dawn of peace.””Ultimately it can end the Arab-Israeli conflict once and for all,” he added.”To all of Israel’s friends in the Middle East… I say as-salaam alaikum, peace unto thee, shalom.”‘Two-state solution’ Neither Trump nor Netanyahu made any reference to the Palestinians during their remarks, and Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas said Tuesday that only an Israeli withdrawal from its occupied territories could bring peace to the Middle East.”Peace, security and stability will not be achieved in the region until the Israeli occupation ends,” Abbas said.As the accords were being signed in Washington, rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip, injuring two people and prompting Israeli air strikes on the territory. For the Middle East, the deals mark a distinct shift in a decades-old status quo where Arab countries have tried to maintain unity against Israel over its treatment of the stateless Palestinians. Both the UAE and Bahrain foreign ministers made a point of mentioning the Palestinians in their remarks before the signing ceremony.”Thank you for choosing peace and halting the annexation of Palestinian territories,” UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan told Netanyahu. “I stand here today to extend a hand of peace.” Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani said a “just, comprehensive and enduring two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict” would be the “bedrock” for lasting Middle East peace.Trump, speaking to Fox News ahead of the ceremony, said the agreements would put pressure on the Palestinians to also negotiate or face being “left out in the cold.” “The Palestinians will ultimately come in too,” he said.”And you’re going to have peace in the Middle East without being stupid and shooting everybody, and killing everybody, and having blood all over the sand.”Trump predicted that Iran — a regional rival to Bahrain and the UAE — would seek to “make a deal” with the United States if he is reelected.F-35 sale to UAE All the four countries at the White House share a common hostility to Iran, which Trump has put under crippling economic and diplomatic pressure. The thaw will give Israel and its two new Arab partners a big economic opening, just when they are looking to rebuild after the international slowdown triggered by the pandemic. And it allows Trump to enjoy the optics of presiding over a historic breakthrough less than 50 days before the November 3 election, which opinion polls suggest he is currently on course to lose.It also provides a dose of good news coverage to Netanyahu, a close Trump ally who faces a corruption trial and criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The UAE, meanwhile, has been using the negotiations as part of its campaign to pressure Washington to sell it the cutting edge F-35 warplane.Trump said Tuesday he was willing to sell the warplanes to the UAE despite Israeli opposition.Hundreds of Palestinians protested ahead of the signing ceremony.Clutching Palestinian flags and wearing blue face masks for protection against the coronavirus, demonstrators rallied in the cities of Nablus and Hebron in the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.Several dozen pro-Palestinian demonstrators also staged a protest outside the White House.”This is a backstab to the Palestinian people,” said Zeina Hutchison, one of the rally’s organizers.Topics : Bahrain and the UAE are the first Arab nations to establish relations with Israel since Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, and Trump hailed it as a “historic day for peace.””After decades of division and conflict we mark the dawn of a new Middle East,” he said.Trump said the agreements, which have been denounced as a “betrayal” by the Palestinians, “will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive peace across the entire region.”Speaking later to reporters, he said Israel would enter into similar deals with up to nine other countries, including regional power Saudi Arabia. Israel normalized relations with long-time foes Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates at the White House on Tuesday as President Donald Trump said similar US-brokered deals were close between the Jewish state and several other nations, including Saudi Arabia.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the foreign ministers of Bahrain and the UAE sealed the accords establishing full diplomatic ties with a ceremony on a flag-decorated White House South Lawn.Hundreds of guests attended the event, which Trump is hoping will boost his reelection chances in November, but there were no handshakes to cement the historic agreements in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.last_img read more

PREMIUMKPU, experts seek criminal sanctions for campaign health violations

first_imgPressure is mounting for the government to revise the Regional Elections Law through a regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to enforce strict health protocols during the upcoming simultaneous regional elections. The General Elections Commission (KPU) and experts have said that candidates should be held criminally liable under the proposed Perppu if they violate health protocols at any stage of the electoral process.“[Campaign events that attract crowds] should be forbidden with heavy punishments through the Perppu,” KPU commissioner Viryan Azis said on Saturday. “One of the possibilities is to increase the prohibition of campaigns that attract crowds, including during balloting and vote counting.”The elections will decide 270 regional leaders, consisting of nine governors, 224 regents and 37 mayors. GMPF, LPFA infrastructure fund buys £150m wind farm stake

first_imgOn completion of the extension, owned by SSE, the stake jointly owned by GMPF & LPFA Infrastructure and Greencoat will fall to 30%.Kieran Quinn, chair at GMPF, said he was pleased with the deal, building on the joint venture’s existing renewables portfolio. The £500m venture’s first investment was to commit £60m to renewable energy projects, investing through Iona Capital.Lancashire County Pension Fund, which has partnered with the LPFA to pool assets but did not join the infrastructure venture, last year also invested in a Portuguese wind farm. Quinn said he looked forward to announcing future investments and attracting other local authority funds to the venture, which will target UK assets. Its numbers are expected to be boosted through support from Merseyside Pension Fund and West Yorkshire Pension Fund, which have committed to pool assets with GMPF as part of a reform of the English and Welsh local government pension sector. Each of the two schemes is expected to invest £250m into the infrastructure joint venture, boosting its capital to £1bn.However, GMPF has also pointed out that a fellow £32bn pool, the Border to Coast partnership founded by East Riding Pension Fund, is said to be in talks to collaborate with the venture. Greater Manchester Pension Fund’s (GMPF) infrastructure joint venture with the London Pensions Fund Authority (LPFA) has invested £150m (€193m) in a UK wind farm, the venture’s second acquisition.GMPF & LPFA Infrastructure acquired a 49.9% stake in the South Lanarkshire-based onshore wind farm alongside the Greencoat UK Wind fund, with the remaining stake being held by Scottish energy company SSE. The energy firm valued the farm at £355m.The Clyde wind farm currently consists of three separate installations, with a generating capacity of about 350 megawatts. However, SSE is expanding the project, boosting capacity by around 173 megawatts.last_img read more

Andrews honored as MAC Hermann finalist

first_imgSenior Morgan Andrews was recognized in the top echelon of women’s soccer players on Jan. 6 at the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet. After leading her team to a NCAA championship title, Andrews became the second Trojan athlete to be named as a MAC Hermann finalist. The honor is equivalent to becoming a Heisman finalist in college football. At the start of the season, Andrews was selected for a watch list along with fellow senior Kayla Mills. After finishing the season as the team’s second-highest scorer, Andrews was placed in the top three players in the nation.West Virginia senior Kadeisha Buchanan won the prestigious award, and Stanford senior Andi Sullivan was the third finalist for the award. Buchanan is a regular for the Canadian national team, earning the title of Canadian Women’s Player of the Year and a nomination for the FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2015.Andrews’ selection among this level of competition reflected the growing success of the USC program throughout her time in the program. After transferring from Notre Dame, Andrews became part of the core that led the team to a national championship this year. She scored 24 points and notched four assists on the season, scoring the first goal in the final game against West Virginia. When she first received the nomination, Andrews was adamant that her goals had nothing to do with individual awards. She had one goal, she said — a national championship. Everything else was just a fun add-on.But after securing that ultimate goal, this honor was the final touch on a rollercoaster of a senior year.“It’s the greatest honor any collegiate soccer player can earn,” Andrews said after her nomination. “When you look at the people who have come before, who have won it in the past, it’s pretty incredible to even be considered on that level.”last_img read more
