This year, saving consistently and regularly is being lauded as the means to achieving one’s goals be they education, a vacation, starting a business, owning a home, or securing finances for retirement. In simple terms, the 2011 Financial Information Month theme advocates that saving is a pre-requisite for a good life. During the month, financial institutions will collaborate with ECCU member governments, the media and other public and private sector partners to host a series of informational and educational initiatives geared at empowering all residents of the ECCU to achieve their life’s goals. These initiatives will include:• A declaration speech by the Minister for Finance in each of the eight member countries of the ECCU to launch the month;• The ECCB’s issuance of a two dollar circulation coin with the month’s theme. The coin is legal tender;• The launch of a Financial Information Month theme song and ringtone;• A business development symposium targeting CEOs, business leaders and prospective entrepreneurs. The symposium will focus on business strategy and management within a changing economic environment; • Discussions on financial issues with schools, business houses, community groups and churches; and • Radio and television programmes and newspaper articles on money management and investing.Financial Information Month is a collaborative effort among the ECCU member governments, financial and academic institutions, the media, private and public sector institutions and community-based groups. The month forms part of an ECCU financial education programme coordinated by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB).The programme incorporates a series of initiatives designed to support the attainment of the goal of “a financially developed and vibrant ECCU region that fosters strong and sustainable economic growth and the improved well-being of the citizenry.” by Nerissa GoldenCaribbean News Now Tweetlast_img read more

Antiguan government seeks clarification on arrest of former minister

first_imgAntiguan government seeks clarification on arrest of former minister Following the arrest of former Antigua minister of government Asot Michael by British authorities last month, the Antiguan government wants reasons of the arrest. The Antigua and Barbuda government says it will seek clarification from the British government regarding the arrest of then tourism and investment minister Asot Michael on his arrival in London last month.“We think it is appropriate that the question be asked, and at all times, the civilities and protocols that need to be exercised between states are recognized by all states large and small,” said Information Minister Melford Nicholas.Nicholas, speaking to reporters at the end of the weekly Cabinet meeting, said the Antigua government believes this is a relevant question in light of the treaty on diplomatic relations which countries usually adhere. Not sure what protocols were breached “To whom much is given much is expected,” Nicholas said, acknowledging that the government could not at this time state what protocols had been breached.“Everyone was jolted by the way the intervention was done and to the extent that the British government may have been led to believe that they were justified in taking that action is a matter of their own determination.“But we must now ask the question from the reverse standpoint in terms of whether or not that would have been the prescribed way of handling such circumstance were it involving a state of a different size,” he told reporters.Advised by lawyers to be silentMichael, who has already said that it was “unfortunate” that Prime Minister Browne did not contact him before relieving him of his portfolio, has said he had been advised by his lawyers to remain quiet on the issue.Prime Minister Browne, who acknowledged that he had, “no firm details of the reasons for Michael’s arrest,” nonetheless said he had advised Governor General, Sir Rodney Williams to revoke  Michael appointment “pending the outcome of his arrest” …by the Metropolitan Police in London.Michael had also indicated to his constituents of St Peter, “who are very dear to me, that they have no reason to doubt my sincerity and my continued devotion and commitment to their interests.”But Prime Minister Browne on Friday announced that the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) is planning ahead and that someone had been appointed to take care of the constituency.last_img read more

New Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has fans in many cities

first_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error For a day at least, the hire was overwhelmingly acclaimed.“Glad to have Dave Roberts on our side!!!” third baseman Justin Turner wrote on his Twitter account.Shawn Green, Roberts’ teammate on the Dodgers from 2002-04, told a local radio station Monday that Roberts is “the right guy.”Even Gabe Kapler, the Dodgers’ director of player development and the runner-up for the job, had nothing but positive things to say.“Dave Roberts and I played together twice,” Kapler wrote on his Twitter account. “Once in 1998 for the Jacksonville Suns, once in 2004 with the Red Sox. The man is an exceptional teammate and a tremendous human. He is prepared and diligent. His work ethic is strong. Dave is going to do a phenomenal job, and Dodger fans have a man they can be proud of at the helm.” Don Mattingly faced criticisms as manager of the Dodgers that Dave Roberts will not. For example, there was the time at a fan forum in July 2013 when team president Stan Kasten was asked why “a Yankee” is managing the team.It didn’t matter then that the Dodgers were in the midst of their historic 42-8 run, the zenith of a streak that saw them improve their winning percentage in each of Mattingly’s first four seasons. To some, five winning seasons and three division titles never mattered. The Dodgers officially named Roberts their manager Monday, 33 days after Mattingly “parted ways” with the team. The knee-jerk reactions won’t matter after Roberts manages his final game, whenever that is. center_img Fan polls and pundits and even the mayor of Los Angeles largely followed step.“With Dave in the dugout, the team not only secures a top-notch baseball mind, but it also makes history, bringing the first person of color to this important post,” Garcetti said in a statement. “It is good to have Dave back home, ready to inspire Angelenos on and off the field.”Going beyond sentiment, there are tangible reasons for optimism that Roberts can succeed.Unlike Mattingly, who was Joe Torre’s hitting coach and the manager of the Dodgers’ Arizona Fall League team for a season, Roberts has leadership experience across several roles. During the 2010 season, he was the San Diego Padres’ special assistant of baseball operations. It was then, during spring training of the 2010 season, that Roberts was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He said in subsequent interviews that it took six months of chemotherapy to beat the disease, but he emerged with a clean bill of health. From 2011-13, Roberts was the Padres’ first-base coach. In 2014 and 2015, he was the bench coach under Bud Black and Pat Murphy, the Padres’ interim manager for a game between the two regimes.Overcoming cancer might be the best testament to Roberts’ persistence, but that trait was already well-known among those who followed his playing career closely. Roberts was 26, playing for the Detroit Tigers’ Double-A affiliate, when he was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 1998. He didn’t become a regular major-league starter for another four years, a playoff hero for another six.“Can’t wait to be the first one to ask our new manager if he remembers that time he stole that base for the Red Sox in the playoffs,” pitcher Brett Anderson joked on Twitter.Roberts struck a sincere tone in a statement released by the Dodgers.“It’s hard to put into words,” he said. “This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime. The Dodgers are the ground-breaking franchise of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Sandy Koufax, Maury Wills, Fernando Valenzuela and Hideo Nomo. When I put on this uniform as a player, I understood the special responsibility to honor those that played before me as well as the amazing bond between the Dodgers and their fans.“I feel that I have now come full circle in my career and there is plenty of unfinished business left in L.A.”Roberts reportedly receives a three-year contract with an option for a fourth, similar in structure to Mattingly’s. Also like Mattingly, Roberts comes with a high likeability quotient and a reputation as a “people person.”“In business, some people are just really good at knowing who needs to light a fire under and who needs to be coddled,” Green told KLAC (570-AM). “Dave has that instinctively.”Unlike Mattingly, Roberts doesn’t have an unbreakable link to any one team, though he might not have to pay for drinks in Boston. Roberts only played half a season for the Red Sox and 2 1/2 seasons for the Dodgers. He also spent time in the Tigers, Indians, Padres and Giants organizations as a player.Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said in a statement that “we could not have been more impressed with (Roberts) through this process. His energy is infectious and he has the rare ability to make a genuine connection with every person he comes across. He has developed strong leadership qualities and accumulated a breadth of baseball experience over his career as both a player and coach. He is a ‘baseball man’ and ‘people person’ in the truest sense of those words. “We feel fully confident that he will effectively lead our team in pursuit of its ultimate goal — bringing a world championship back to the city of Los Angeles.”last_img read more
