Your Tax Dollars Hard at Work

The funding will be used to study fish that will use a “fish ladder” system to help travel upstream in a section of the Eel River in Wabash County.Perhaps we should help our government climb out of debt and strengthen our economy so our citizens  climb their career ladder, before we help the fish climb the ladder to upstream success. Chile: Female Service Members Playing Key Roles

first_imgBy Dialogo January 11, 2011 Fuentes: I want to continue developing my abilities regarding peace missions and to turn my experience over to future generations who decide to apply for peace operations, which is how I can continue to contribute to the institution. Infosurhoy.com: When and why did you enlist in the army? Fuentes: I am an officer with the Female Military Line Service. In civilian terms, it is equivalent to human resources. I chose this service because [one’s] work directly benefits the institution’s personnel. I’ve always had a strong urge to serve, and I believed that I could develop my abilities within this specialty and be able to contribute to the common good. Infosurhoy.com: What were your duties in Haiti? Fuentes: The application process is the same for women as it is for men. There are physical ability tests, which are part of the institution’s yearly examination, psychological tests and an English-language accreditation by the army. After that stage, I passed a training period called “pre-deployment,” which the army used to select the staff that would be included in the mission. Infosurhoy.com: How did you feel when you accepted the mission? Fuentes: When I was notified that I had passed the application requirements and was part of the staff who would participate in the pre-deployment training period, I was very excited to be faced with a new challenge, keeping in mind at all times the great commitment this implied as a representative of women in the armed forces, of the institution and of my country. Infosurhoy.com: How can service women help in peace missions? Infosurhoy.com: What have you gained in personal and professional terms? Fuentes: It was in 1999 and I did it because I grew up watching my mother work. She was an officer in the army. Following her example, I decided to enter the institution, and I chose the same service (area of responsibility) to which she belonged. Fuentes: I was the officer for the Civil and Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Section. We coordinated between the MINUSTAH Headquarters in the city of Cap-Haïtien and local authorities to provide support activities for the community. Some of the activities included bringing drinking water to different parts of the city and to public schools, repairing classroom furniture, teaching personal hygiene classes to prevent illness and teaching first aid classes. We also organized free medical visits and assisted health officials in teaching a course on baking so [Haitians] could develop a trade to earn money. center_img VALPARAÍSO, Chile – The Chilean Armed Forces have 556 members deployed in peace operations. One of them is MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti), which began in 2004 and has 514 Chilean troops. So far, Chile has participated in a total of 20 peace missions, five of which are ongoing. Infosurhoy.com interviewed Cpt. Andrea Fuentes Eisendecher, one of the 68 female service members who have represented the country in peace missions. Fuentes, 30, spent about seven months in Haiti in 2009. Infosurhoy.com: What struck you the most about the Haitian people? Fuentes: Having been deployed to MINUSTAH taught me what is personal is linked very closely to what is professional. It is a life experience, where you learn that your personal interests become completely [unimportant] when it comes to reaching out to someone who really needs help. It is not only your personal desire to do your work in the best way possible, but it’s the image of carrying a whole country on your shoulders, which is what the army tries to do. In addition, you know that your life could be in danger. You learn to work under a different kind of pressure than the one you have in your own country, and to make careful decisions that are paramount to carrying out the mission. The most meaningful thing I learned in Haiti was not the vital importance of wearing the blue helmet every time I had to get into a vehicle or wearing a bullet-proof vest and carrying my weapons every day when I went out. The most important thing I learned was that the infinite innocence in a child’s look of gratitude made the risk worth it. Fuentes: The Twelfth Chilean Battalion was made up of 188 members from the Chilean army and navy. In the section to which I was assigned, there were three females: a non-commissioned officer in the navy, a non-commissioned officer in the army and me. Infosurhoy.com: What is your specialty? Infosurhoy.com: How many were in your unit? Infosurhoy.com: What are your future plans? Fuentes: The children’s interest in learning and their parents’ interest in providing them an education. Infosurhoy.com: What was the selection process to represent Chile in the MINUSTAH? Fuentes: Female personnel can contribute to peace missions by covering a larger number of posts because it is important that the [local] community see the presence of women. Women have an inherent sensitivity, which allows us to reach out to the civilian world with great empathy, considering we are as prepared as our male peers. Being employed in tasks regarding the coordination of activities between civilians and the military is a great way to be in contact with the community.last_img read more

Boys soccer Lakers oust Mustangs again; Westhill tops Cazenovia in OT

first_img Tags: boys soccerMarcellusskaneatelesWesthill Given the wild nature of the 3-2 game the Lakers claimed on Sept. 25, it surprised no one that there was an early goal. It only took three minutes, 11 seconds for Tylar Moss to force a turnover in the right corner and cross to the middle, where Owen Cheney’s perfect header sailed past Cory Cangemi.Skaneateles enjoyed most of the good chances in the first half. Were it not for at least three strong stops from Cangemi (he would finish with 12 saves), the Lakers may have built a much larger margin.Instead, Skaneateles would have to protect that one-goal lead for more than 76 minutes, but it did so quite well. Defenders Alex Arefyev, Andrew Moss, Will Pinckney and Gavin Cheney constantly forced the Mustangs’ forwards outside and into low-percentage shots. Though Andrew Neumann finished with eight saves, rarely were the stops difficult ones. But Neumann did make a diving stop on Matt Kershaw’s low shot at the left post early in the second half, and the Mustangs never got as close again. Both teams dominated their respective opening-round matches, with Marcellus bashing no. 14 seed Adirondack 9-0 and Skaneateles handling no. 11 seed Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 7-0.The Mustangs had Brett Beal earn four assists and Kershaw two assists as four players – Ryan Lundrigan, Tristan Jarvi, Marcelo Suarez and JoshWilkinson – score two goals apiece. Grady Germain had one goal and one assist, with Dakota Baker adding an assist. As for the Lakers, it led VVS 3-0 by halftime and kept going as Tylar Moss piled up three goals and two assists. Single goals went to Owen Cheney, Landon Hellwig, Jack Donovan and Ben Clymer, with Arefyev and Andrew Moss getting single assists.Meanwhile, there was Westhill, the reigning sectional and state champions, lined up as a no. 4 seed to meet no. 5 seed Cazenovia in the quarterfinals – this after the Warriors had ousted the Lakers in each of the previous three sectional title games. And once again, it was Westhill ending Cazenovia’s season, rallying to edge the Lakers 2-1 in double overtime.Netting the only goal of the first half, Cazenovia had Joe Spires, in the 17th minute pass to Jake Scherrer, who flung a shot home. Meanwhile, a steady Lakers defense made Westhill work every time it had the ball.As they moved to the second half it stayed 1-0, but the Warriors stayed patient and pulled even, 1-1, sending this sectional game beyond regulation. One 15-minute sudden-victory overtime passed without a resolution. And the two sides were inching toward penalty kicks when Bo BenYehuda’s corner kick found its way past several Laker defenders and past goalie Ethan Baker to end it.Philip Bogan and Will Delano get the goals, while BenYehuda and Jackson Powers earned assists. Ian Prebish finished with four saves.Westhill had first rolled past no. 13 seed Oneida 5-0 in last Tuesday’s rainy opening round, getting five goals from five different players –BenYehuda, Bogan, Powers, Andrew Centore and Henry Centore. Tom Coman and Chris Schwartz earned assists. The sectional bracket had opened up in the early rounds when top seed General Brown was stunned by no. 16 seed Holland Patent, the Golden Knights then falling to no. 8 seed Chittenango in the quarterfinals. So it’s Westhill facing the Bears in Wednesday’s semifinal alongside Skaneateles taking on no. 2 seed Clinton, the two games taking place at Fayetteville-Manlius and the winners advancing to the Nov. 4 title game at Jamesville-DeWitt. When the Section III Class B boys soccer playoff bracket was released, immediate attention was given to the possibility of some epochal match-ups in the quarterfinal round if the seeds held.Of greatest interest was Marcellus meeting Skaneateles, with the no. 3 seed Mustangs at home, trying to break a skid against the no. 6 seed Lakers that included a 2-1 defeat in this exact same round one year ago.Again, it was close – but once again, it was Skaneateles finishing on top, getting the only goal it needed in the opening minutes and then riding letter-perfect defense to a 1-0 win. Chelsea reject £35m bids from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid for Willian

first_imgChelsea appear determined to keep winger, Willian, after the club once again rebuffed approaches for the player. The club rejected bids of £35m from both Spanish Champions, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for the Brazilian according to reports from England.Chelsea had earlier rejected three bids – a final one of about £55m – last summer for Willian while further approaches from Barcelona, including a rumoured player-plus-cash switch, were binned by the Blues.Willian has one year left on his current deal and could leave the club for free if he does not sign a new contract. The player has been a key part of Chelsea’s team since his move from Russian side, Anzhi Makhachkala, for £30m in 2013.While he’s had a decent time at the club, including winning two Premier League titles, a Europa League crown and an FA Cup while scoring 52 goals, Willian’s starting place came under threat last season with the rise of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Maurizio Sarri’s preference for Pedro in the second half of the campaign. However, with star player Eden Hazard now a Real Madrid signing, Willian’s importance to Chelsea might become pronounced again. And with the club facing a two-transfer window ban, they would prefer not to lose any more of their main players.Willian is currently away with Brazil at the Copa America where he was a late call-up to replace the injured Neymar. He came on as a substitute in the host nation’s 3-0 win over Bolivia.last_img read more
