DONEGAL FARMERS ANXIOUS OVER POTATO CROP

first_imgBetween 80% to 90% of the maincrop potato harvest in Donegal remains in the ground as farmers struggle to get machinery into soaking fields.Dreadful rainfalls in recent weeks is hampering the harvest, said the IFA.In a normal year, the harvest would be at least 50pc completed at this stage. IFA potato chairman Charlie Doherty said the wet weather would severely cost farmers in terms of additional fuel costs and damage to the soil. He added that farmers would also have to hire extra machines to take advantage of any dry spells.“We’ve had so much rain that no-one is going to get into a field for at least another week,” he said. This could put up the price of spuds in the shops.DONEGAL FARMERS ANXIOUS OVER POTATO CROP was last modified: October 19th, 2011 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
