Lights, camera, Cabot

first_imgIn the next four years, today’s freshmen will spend about 2 million minutes at Harvard, and precisely where to devote them can be overwhelming. They can get a little help with that decision at the Cabot Science Library. There, sophomores Rosan Bishwakarma and Lucas Ward created a new podcast that shares graduating seniors’ stories, advice, and insights on everything from writing a thesis on Beyoncé to balancing athletics and academics to graduating early to getting involved in a political campaign. The casual and collaborative approach helps freshmen make sense of Harvard’s many resources.Bishwakarma and Ward conceived of the podcast over a chance conversation at lunch in Annenberg Hall. Their wanted to talk to graduating seniors about their experiences before they left; in Bishwakarma’s words, “to capture all these different sides of Harvard and share it.”Each studio comes equipped with the tools to bring students’ ideas to the screen, including backdrops, microphones, lighting board, and a camera. Photo by Enrique DiazCoincidentally, they next walked through Cabot and saw one of their friends in the media studios. They were off and running with their idea: connecting with library staff, learning how to use the equipment, and scheduling guests. After that, “It was just about hitting record and having a good conversation,” Ward said. The multimedia studios sit past the library’s glass-walled study rooms. Each has a green screen, microphones, lighting board, and camera, everything but the imagination and flash drive needed to bring tangible form to students’ ideas.“Students have a million ideas,” said Paul Worster, a multimodal learning librarian who helps run the studio. After a brief orientation with the space and equipment, anyone in the Harvard community can reserve to produce their own creative work, and extra help is available from librarians and student employees next to the Macs used as editing bays.Podcast recording is just one way to use the new space. Other projects on deck include TED-style talks for a psychology class, instructional videos on 3-D scanning, and a children’s educational show using puppets as teaching tools.Studio B is set up to facilitate conversation both on and off camera. Photo by Enrique DiazThe studios encourage both collaboration and learning. “We want to empower [students] to be creative on their own with the tools they have,” said Susan Berstler, a technology specialist involved in the studio. The Cabot team enjoys “when the lightbulb goes on and students take ownership of their ideas,” she said.“If you have an idea, there are so many talented people willing to help and support you,” Bishwakarma said. “Try it out. The worst thing that can happen is you learn something.”To reserve space in the studios, please email [email protected]last_img read more

Managing a big club like that comes with big expectations and he’s managed that very well,” said the QPR boss.AdChoices广告“He possibly hasn’t got the resources that other clubs have but he still manages what he has very, very well.“It’s difficult to be at a club that long – and being at the same club a long time can bring it’s own problems, because people will have heard the same voice over and over again.“It takes a skilled manager to keep making players aware of what’s required of them and he’s done that really well.”Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Leonard is said to be ready to sever ties with the Spurs, with Los Angeles as his preferred destination and the Lakers as his top team. The Lakers’ interest is believed to be mutual. The Clippers also could have interest in Leonard. VIDEO: Watch Kyle Kuzma’s game winner and what he said about it The San Antonio Express-News and ESPN.com were the first to report the 26-year-old Leonard’s desire to leave the Spurs, with each citing unnamed sources. Leonard’s relationship with the Spurs soured last season over the treatment of a quadriceps injury that limited him to nine games.Leonard has asked San Antonio to trade him, the Express-News reported. Leonard graduated from King High School in Riverside and had two standout seasons at San Diego State before the Spurs drafted him 15th overall in the 2011 draft. It’s unclear who the Lakers would send the Spurs in order to acquire Leonard, who is eligible for a five-year, $219-million contract extension from San Antonio. The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers also could be in the mix in a trade for Leonard, who has averaged 16.3 points and 6.2 rebounds during his NBA career. The Lakers have a number of talented young players who could be attractive in a trade for Leonard, including Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Julius Randle. The deal might make more sense for the rebuilding Lakers than for the Spurs, however.San Antonio has been a fierce rival of the Lakers during Coach Gregg Popovich’s tenure with the Spurs. Popovich and Phil Jackson disliked each other after so many tense playoff battles, and it’s not clear the bitterness between the franchises has subsided since Jackson’s retirement from coaching in 2011. Plus, there are questions about the Spurs’ willingness to help create a Lakers superteam that could challenge the Golden State Warriors for NBA supremacy. After all, the Lakers are among the leading suitors for LeBron James and perhaps Paul George, another Southern Californian who would like to return.Additionally, it’s possible Leonard and the Spurs could settle their differences before the NBA draft Thursday and he could sign an extension in the coming weeks. Leonard and Popovich were scheduled to talk in the next few days, according to the Express-News report. The Spurs are the only team that can offer Leonard the five-year, $219-million deal.Meanwhile in Playa Vista, a few miles north of the Lakers’ training facility in El Segundo, the Clippers have two first-round draft picks, Nos. 12 and 13, and several intriguing players on their roster, which could be attractive should the Spurs grant Leonard’s trade demand. The Clippers are poised to begin their own rebuilding effort after missing the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons. They granted Chris Paul’s wish to be traded to the Houston Rockets last spring and dealt Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons in the summer, clearing the way for a remodel.Doc Rivers agreed to a contract extension last month and it’s believed he returned to coach the team because management is determined to return the franchise to playoff form without tearing apart the roster and starting from scratch. Acquiring Leonard would play a big part in that regard. For what it was worth, and that’s probably not a whole lot, one oddsmaker on Friday put the chances of Leonard joining the Lakers next season at 5/7. The Boston Celtics were next at 15/4, followed by the Spurs and 76ers at 5/1 and the Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers at 10/1.Sign up for Home Turf and get 3 exclusive stories every SoCal sports fan must read, sent daily.
