NEWHALL — Hart High School alumni, already battling the district about declining conditions at the 60-year-old campus, now are trying to get an upcoming board meeting moved to the school. Advocates say many parents in the neighborhood rely on public transportation and have trouble getting the five miles across town to the William S. Hart Union High School headquarters building in Centre Pointe. But board President Patricia Hanrion said moving the meeting would leave less time for the board to decide what to do about parents’ concerns. The next meeting is Wednesday. “I have gotten three e-mails requesting a change of venue for the meeting,” Hanrion said. “I feel like we have heard what the concerns of the community are and the urgency needed to resolve the issues. … Now we want to move forward.” But Michelle Levicrain, a Hart Regiment Alumni member and an advocate for improving the school, said she knows a lot of parents who want to talk to board members but won’t be able to get to district offices for the meeting. “Why was the meeting moved for other communities and not for this one?” she asked. In February, Hart board meetings were moved to accommodate residents in the Castaic and Stevenson Ranch areas. Hart board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine agreed with Levicrain. “There is a lot of interest in the Hart community to attend this meeting, and as we have done in the past we should accommodate this community,” Mercado-Fortine said. “If we don’t move this meeting, we are cutting out a very important segment of our Hart district population. They want to participate, but for many it is a hardship, and a great distance, to get across town to a board meeting,” she said. The Hart board meets at 7:30 p.m. every other Wednesday at 21515 Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita. — Connie Llanos (661) [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
